Boot the Operating System
PowerPC Open Firmware Quick Start Guide 21
Boot the Operating System
PowerPC Open Firmware allows easy booting at the menu level.
The Booting Process
For the Boot, Diagnostic Boot and AutoScan Boot operations, the
NVRAM variables: boot-device, diag-device, and pboot-device-
default are parsed from left to right. The boot operation then
performs an open-dev on each parsed device. If the open-dev is
successful, a boot is performed on the successfully opened device to
the Þlename in the NVRAM variable: boot-Þle, diag-Þle, or boot-
Þle.
The Network Boot operation creates a string using the net-cfg-
method, serveripaddr, clientipaddr, gatewayipaddr, and boot-Þle.
The process then invokes a boot net: command using the created
string.
