Rebuilding
the
Kernel
If
the system
does
not boot
or
if
the
booting
process
hangs,
the
problim may
be
caused
by
a
cormpted
kernel.
Use
the
following
procedure
as
a
quick
way
to
rebuild
the kernel.
To
=build
the
kern&
1.
Enter
the
Installation
utility.
At
the System Maintenance Menu, enterb
System prompts
you
to
select
a
media
device
and
to
install
media.

InsM
appropriate
media
into
the
selected
media
device.
3.
Start
the Administrative Command
utility.
At
the
Inso
prompt, enteradmin.
4.
Start
a
UNIX
shell.
At
the
prompt,
enter
sh.
5.
Change
to
the
/root
directory.
At
the
#
prompt, enter
cd
mot
Note:
When in’the shell
in
the Administrative
command
utility,
the/mot
directory
is
the
/directory
when the
system
has
booted
and
is
running
IRIX.
6.
Rename the kernel.
At
the
#
prompt,
enter
mv
unix
unix.copy.
7.
Exit
the shell.
At
the
#
prompt, enter
exit
8.
Exit
the Administrative Command
utility.
At
the
arlmin>
prompt,
enterexit
The system executes the
exit
commands
and displays
various
messages.
9.
Restart
t&e system.
At
the “Ready
to
restart
the system. Restart?“ prompt, entery.
Restarting the system
causes
a
new
kernel
to
be
built
The system
uses
the
new
kernel
to
boot
.
