Dig a Gem

DIRECTIONS:

1. Before you begin, find a clean area with a hard flat surface to do your work.

Cover the area with a protective cover to protect the area from the dust of the

sand block.

Note: Have all your tools ready to use: mallet, dowel, brush and sand block.

2. Put the sand block flat on the table and cautiously use your mallet and dowel

to start scraping away bits and parts from the block. Do not bang or hammer

away at the sand block as that can be unsafe. Use your brush to eliminate

dust from the block while you unearth your gems.

3. When you start to see a gem through the sand, dig around and on the sides

of the gem. Once the gem is freed from the sand block, rinse the remaining sand

by placing the gem in a bowl of water.

4. Adhere to these same steps to excavate all of your gems. A good gemologist

understands that his/her work requires time and patience.
