Trap Reporting
A trap is an agent-detected event sent over UDP port 162 that indicates either:
z a change has occurred in the status of the agent, or
z an unauthorized manager device has attempted to get data from, or change data
on, the agent
You can configure the STB NIP 2311 NIM to report traps to one or two authorized
SNMP managers. You can also enable or disable specific traps.
Authorizing Access
SNMP uses community names to limit unauthorized access to the STB NIP 2311
NIM configuration settings and trap notifications. A community name acts as a
password. Each type of communication (Get, Set, and Trap) can be separately
configured with its own password.
The manager and the agent must both be configured with the same password
before:
z the agent can accept Get or Set requests from the manager, and
z the manager can accept trap notifications from the agent
NOTE: If you do not configure private community names for Get and Set requests,
any SNMP manager can read the execute these commands against the parameters
in your STB NIP 2311 NIM.
