9.4.12 Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)
Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is a protocol developed by Microsoft tar-
geted at creating VPN connections over the Internet. This enables remote users to
access the gateway via any ISP that supports PPTP on its servers. PPTP encapsu-
lates network traffic, encrypts content using Microsoft's Point-to-Point Encryption
(MPPE) protocol that is based on RC4, and routes using the generic routing encap-
sulation (GRE) protocol. With Watson, PPTP is targeted at serving two purposes:
Connecting Watson to the Internet. Such a connection is established using us-
er name and password authentication.
Connecting Watson to a remote network using a Virtual Private Network (VPN)
tunnel over the Internet. This enables secure transfer of data to another loca-
tion over the Internet, using user name and password authentication.
9.4.12.1 Creating a PPTP connection with the Connection Wizard
To create a new PPTP connection, perform the following steps:
1. In the 'Network Connections' screen (see Figure 9-11), click the 'New Connec-
tion' link. The 'Connection Wizard' screen appears (see Figure 9-12).
2. Select the 'Advanced Connection' radio button and click 'Next'. The 'Advanced
Connection' screen appears (see Figure 9-15).
