SOL 3D SCANNER
Product briefing for distributors and resellers
“I have access to several mid-price scanning options and several very expensive units. For the
price, this unit performed very well on a resin-cast gnome that I’ve used for a scan target in
other systems. The first scan came out perfectly and with a watertight STL file ready to print.”
– Maker in Texas
“I found the quality of construction excellent, and the assembly easy. My only criticism is that
it takes time. I’m eager to make more scans with this unit. The software was very intuitive and
ran smoothly on my laptop.”

“DON’T WASTE TIME WITH ANYTHING ELSE IN THIS PRICE RANGE OR LOWER, THIS IS THE
BEST BY FAR
After burning my fingers with the Makerbot Digitizer I had all but given up hope of finding
something reasonably priced that could solve my 3d scanning need. I’ve got a few scans under my
belt so far with the Sol scanner and I’ve been happy with the results so far. Echoing others, it would
have been nice to only have one hook up, the black out cover is a little challenging to get back in to it’s
baggy. But these are tolerable given the output. The SMS update feature might be handy for some but
I’d prefer email or IFTTT integration. On another positive note I’ve found the tech support exemplary.
I had a couple of questions during setup and initial scans and they responded very quickly.”

“THIS IS A FINE SCANNER AT A GOOD PRICE
I’m very pleased with the results from this scanner. When it arrived, I was surprised that it came
with a black “photo tent” type light shield, because I thought it might make it more difficult
to use. It turns out that it doesn’t. The tent takes up a little more desktop room (about 13 x 24
inches) than the scanner alone, but it does a really good job of keeping ambient light from
affecting the results. The resolution is very good. I don’t have a good way to test it seems to be
better than the claimed 0.1mm. Accuracy is also very good. Scans of items 2-3 inches in size
are within 3% of the scanned item size. This is not a fast scanner, at 20+ minutes per pass, but
that’s not an issue for me and my work flow. The software has one annoyance that I have seen
twice - if one of the scan passes fails, there is no information provided about WHY the pass failed,
and the only option you have is to end the entire scan and take the results you have. It would be
much better to be able to discard the problem pass and continue. The ability to export multiple
file formats is very good, and I have been able to edit the exported .obj files in Fusion 360 or go
directly to a 3d print slicer with the exported .stl files. As with any structured light scanner, shiny
objects and those with regular repeated patterns may be hard to scan. This is common to the
technology and not a fault of this scanner. I’m very happy with the performance for the price.”

“GREAT 3D SCANNER
Both the hardware and software for this 3d scanner have been well thought out and executed.
It’s a little on the slow side, but for the quality of the scans it produces it is more than worth
the wait. As noted by others, the options in the software are fairly basic but since it is a
brand new product that also means there is lots of room for improvement on the very solid
foundation. Looking forward to seeing just how capable this scanner is!”
