CHAPTER Welcome 1 1 The Savi® Mobile Reader SMR-650P is a portable radio frequency identification (RFID) interrogator that communicates with all models of Savi RFID tags. The SMR-650P-211 Reader has a customized Symbol cable and works with a Symbol 8100 or 8146 device to provide you with a standalone handheld reader. The SMR-650P-210 Reader has a DB-9 connector for use with a laptop or desktop PC. In This Guide This guide describes the specifications, features, and use of the SMR-650P Reader.

CHAPTER 2 Savi Mobile Reader SMR-650P and Handheld Device Description SMR-650P Reader Communication The SMR-650P Reader has both ultra high frequency (UHF) and low frequency (LF) transmitters that communicate with all Savi RFID tags via the integrated antenna. Savi SmartChain Mobile Manager is Savi-provided software with the SMR-650P-211 Reader that you must install on your Symbol 8100 or 8146 handheld. It displays information for tags that have been interrogated, collected, or scanned.
SMR-650P Reader Communication LF Mode Operation LF mode is controlled by the SmartChain Mobile Manager application running on the handheld device. LF mode is compatible only with SaviTags. To use LF mode, you must turn it on in SmartChain Mobile Manager.

Optimizing the SMR-650P Reader Tag Collection Range As shown in Figure 2-4, if you face north or south, the radiation pattern of the antenna is strongest to the left and right with a 200-foot maximum tag collection range in either direction. During the first tag collection, most tags within an omni directional pattern of 100 feet will be collected.

Operating the SMR-650P Reader with the Symbol Handheld Device Operating the SMR-650P Reader with the Symbol Handheld Device The SMR-650P-211 Reader is compatible with Symbol 8100 and 8146 handheld devices, which are Windows Pocket PC devices with options for 37- or 47-character alphanumeric keyboards. Symbol 8100 and 8146 handhelds feature a backlight for the keypad.

Operating the SMR-650P Reader with the Symbol Handheld Device Keys Unique to the Symbol 8100 and 8146 Power/Suspend Key When the display is on, press this key to place the handheld in suspend mode. After a minute, the display goes blank. Resume Key All yellow keys on the Symbol 8100 or 8146 can operate as a resume key. Press any yellow key to turn the power back on when the handheld is in sleep or suspend mode. Sleep mode is automatically turned on when the handheld is not used for two minutes.
CHAPTER 2 Savi Mobile Reader SMR-650P and Handheld Device Description Reset Pinhole The reset pinhole is located on the back panel of the SMR-650P-211 Reader. Inside the pinhole is a reset button, which you can use to reboot the SMR-650P-211 Reader if the unit is not communicating with Savi RFID tags. Use the tip of an unfolded paper clip or a similar object without a sharp tip to gently press the reset button. The unit is rebooted when you hear a click.
3 CHAPTER Connecting the SMR-650P Reader and Charging the Battery 3 Connecting the SMR-650P Reader to the Symbol Handheld Device You connect the custom Symbol cable of the Savi Mobile Reader SMR-650P-211 to a port located at the bottom of the handheld device. Use the SMR-650P-211 Reader carrying case so you can easily hold both the handheld device and mobile reader in one hand. As you follow these steps, refer to the corresponding photos on the next page. 1.

Batteries Batteries Recharging the SMR-650P Reader Battery The SMR-650P Reader has a Lithium-Ion internal battery that is not replaceable. To recharge the battery, you use the AC adapter that Savi provides. 1. Ensure that your SMR-650P Reader is not connected to a handheld. Note: Disconnect the mobile reader from the handheld to suspend RF operations while it is charging. Operating the mobile reader while recharging may compromise the battery charge time. 2. Plug the AC adapter into an active power unit.
CHAPTER 3 Connecting the SMR-650P Reader and Charging the Battery Recharging the Handheld Device in the Carrying Case 1. Ensure that your SMR-650P-211 Reader is not connected to a handheld device. 2. Unbutton and unzip the back of the carrying case. 3. Insert the handheld device into its docking station. 4. Plug the docking station AC adapter into an active power unit. 5. Connect the other end of the AC adapter to the docking station.
Batteries Battery Status Green LED You can determine the percentage of battery power available based on the activity of the green LED on the SMR-650P Reader.
CHAPTER 3 Connecting the SMR-650P Reader and Charging the Battery Verifying the SMR-650P Reader Connection To check the connection, you must have SmartChain Mobile Manager installed on the handheld device. For installation instructions, see the Savi SmartChain Mobile Manager Administrator Guide. 1. Turn on the handheld device. 2. Start SmartChain Mobile Manager. 3. To verify that the SMR-650P Reader is connected properly, check the connection icon in the lower left.

4 CHAPTER Printing Labels 4 Using SmartChain Mobile Manager, you can print using an infrared interface (IrDA) or the serial interface cable (Zebra Pt# 52712). The infrared interface is recommended for printing labels on the Zebra PT47X printer. Before you attempt to print using the Savi Mobile Reader SMR-650P, verify that the Zebra printer is in proper working order by printing a test label. See the Zebra PT47X users guide for instructions.
CHAPTER 4 Printing Labels Note: A Symbol handheld 81XX with a Strong Arm based microprocessor or equipped with a black and white display cannot print using the IrDA interface. Check the Symbol Product Reference Guide to verify the microprocessor type. If your handheld has this configuration, you must use the serial cable for printing. See “Printing with the Serial Interface Cable” on page 34.

CHAPTER 4 Printing Labels IrDA Printing Troubleshooting Tips If you have problems printing using the IrDA port: ◆ Hold the PDT81XX IrDA lens steady 3-inches to 6-inches over the PT47X IrDA lens and then select Print. ◆ Verify that the smm.properties file has the correct information: a. Open the My Pocket PC directory and go to the \Application\Savi\SMM\6.0 directory. b. Find the smm.properties file and copy it to the local PC’s desktop. c.

Open the file with a text editor and modify it as follows: PRINT.PrinterPort.Name=COM1: PRINT.PrinterPort.UseIR=False 7. Save and close the smm.properties file and place the newly modified file in the original \Application\Savi\SMM\6.0 My Pocket PC directory. 8. When asked to replace the original file, select Yes. Active Sync synchronizes with the handheld device.
