1. Safety Precautions Markings and Symbols The following symbols or markings are used in this User’s Guide and on the printer so that you can properly use the printer, and to prevent any damage to property, harm or injury to yourself and others. Make sure to read their explanations carefully to familiarize yourself with their meanings. Warning Caution PN9001122 This symbol indicates information that, if ignored or applied incorrectly, creates the danger of death or serious personal injury.
Symbol example The triangle ( ) indicates something you should take absolute care when doing. The cautions are indicated within the symbol. The symbol on the left indicates caution with electric shock. 1 Safety Precautions A diagonal line within a circle ( ) indicates something you should not do. The symbol on the left indicates you should not try to take the unit apart. A black circle ( ) indicates something you need to do. The symbol on the left indicates you should unplug the unit from the wall outlet.
Warning! Do not place any containers with water or chemicals, such as flower vases or cups, as well as small metallic objects near the printer. If any of these should fall into the printer, immediately turn off the power and contact your nearest dealer or service center. Continued use creates the danger of fire or electrical shock. Foreign Matter Do not drop or insert metallic or flammable objects into the openings on the printer (such as outlets for cables).
Warning! 1 Abnormal Conditions Safety Precautions Continued use of the printer while it is emitting smoke or a strange odor, creates the danger of fire or electrical shock. Immediately turn off the power and contact your nearest dealer or service center for repairs. Do not try to service the printer by yourself. Disassembly Never try to take the unit apart or modify it in any way. Doing so creates the danger of fire or electrical shock.
Warning! • Use only the specified voltage. Using a different voltage may create the danger of fire or electrical shock. • Never use the battery charger with any other battery pack except for the specified one. Doing so can rupture the battery, cause leakage, fire or electrical shock. • Never cut, damage or modify the power cord. Also, never place heavy objects on, set fire to or pull the power cord, as it can damage the cord and create the danger of fire or electrical shock.
Caution! 1 Location Safety Precautions Do not locate the printer in areas subjected to high humidity or condensation. If condensation forms inside the printer, immediately turn off the power and do not use it until it has dried out. Continued use creates the danger of electrical shock. Power Never operate the power switch, replace the battery pack or unplug the AC adapter or battery charger with wet hands. Doing so creates the danger of electrical shock.
Caution! • The thermal head gets very hot after printing. Take care when replacing labels after printed and when cleaning to avoid burn. • Touching the edge of the thermal head with bare hands may cause injury. Take care when replacing labels or cleaning to avoid injury. • Do not try to replace the thermal head by yourself. Doing so creates the danger of injury, burns or electric shock. Easy Cutter This part contains a blade. Take care to avoid cutting your hands.
Caution! 1 Replacing the Battery Pack Safety Precautions • Use only the specified battery pack. • When replacing the battery pack, make sure to install the pack with the poles (+) and (–) facing the correct direction. Incorrectly replacing the battery can rupture the battery and create the danger of injury or damage to surrounding areas due to leakage. • When disposing of old battery packs, make sure to contact your nearest dealer or service center.
Precautions in Use Do not drop the printer or subject it to impact or vibrations. The printer can handle normal vibrations when being transported. However, care should be taken so that the printer is not subjected to strong vibration or impact of falling. Never disassemble or modify the printer. Do not open the printer by yourself as the components inside the printer are of high precision and have been finely adjusted. Use only the specified cable to connect to the external input terminal.
2. Unpacking 2 Unpacking After opening the box, make sure that all the printer’s accessories are included. If there are any accessories missing, contact your nearest dealer or service center. Name and Function of Operating Parts PN9001122 Belt hook: Attaches the shoulder belt when hanging the printer on a belt. * Do not hang the printer on to anything else but a belt. Label guide: Adjust this to the label size being used. Label ejection: The printed label comes out here. Label width scale: Scale for measuring the width of the label being used. DC input jack: For connection of the AC adapter. DC input jack cap: Covers the DC input jack.
4. Before Starting 4 Charging the Battery Pack Before Starting Place the battery pack on the battery charger (optional) to charge it. (1) Plug one end of the power cord into the battery charger and the other end into the wall outlet. (2) Place the battery pack on the battery charger and slide it in the direction of the arrow. When the battery pack starts charging, the CHARGE indicator lights up in orange. When the battery pack is fully charged, the indicator turns off. (Fully charged).
Charging Time The duration of the battery pack from empty until fully charged is about 2.5 hours. Battery pack charge confirmation mark When the battery pack is removed from the printer, the charge confirmation mark on the back of the battery pack is blank. When attaching the battery pack on the charger once and then removing it, a green black box () appears on the back of the pack. By looking at the confirmation mark, you can check if the battery is charged or not.
Installing and removing the Battery Pack 4 Before Starting * Remove the Protection case. (1) Place your finger on the battery cover ribbed area, and slide it as far as it will move in the direction of the arrow. (2) After releasing the battery cover lock, open the battery cover in the direction of the arrow. (3) Insert the battery pack. After that, take the above procedure in reverse order to close the battery cover.
(4) When removing the battery, place your finger into the notch on the battery and pull the battery out. Before Starting 4 * Make sure to turn the power off before removing or replacing the battery. When the power is turned off, the status indicator lights up in green. Do not remove the battery while the indicator lights up. After making sure that the status indicator is off, you may then remove the battery.
Using the AC Adapter 4 Before Starting Plug the specified AC Adapter (optional) into the printer. (1) Take off the DC input jack AC adapter cap, and plug the AC adapter into the DC input jack. DC output Jack (2) Plug the AC adapter into the outlet. DC input jack cap DC input jack * Always turn off the printer when unplugging the AC adapter or DC output jack, or when cutting off the power source. When turning off the printer, the status indicator lights up in green.
Loading Labels The method of loading labels may vary depending on the print mode. Labels Journal Roll * Remove the Protection case. (1) Place your fingers on the open cover ribbed area, and slide the cover Open/Close lever in the direction of the arrow. * Slide the Open/Close lever until the mark on the lever is covered. Open cover Cover Open/ Close lever (2) When the open cover pops open, fully open the cover in the direction of the arrow.
4 Before Starting (3) Place the label roll on the spindle on the open cover side. * When inserting the label roll, make sure to press down the label core to prevent the labels from raveling out. * When removing remaining labels, insert your finger in the label core and remove the label with the core to prevent the labels from raveling out. (4) After removing the leading tape on the roll, take the leading edge of the first label of the roll and pull it out from the label ejection via the platen roller.
Dispense mode Labels Non-dispensed label First perform steps 1 through 5 on pages 23 and 24 (Continuous mode) (1) Pick the Dispense/Continuous switch lever from both sides, and slide the Dispense unit to the direction of the arrow. * Leave more than 30mm of the label out for the Dispense mode. * Slide the Dispenser unit until it is set in place. * Always set the Dispenser unit back to the Continuous mode when opening/closing the cover.
Changing Roll Width 4 Before Starting (1) Check the width of the roll. Set the label guide scale to the width of the label, and slide until it overlaps. (2) Roll the label guide clockwise and secure it in position. When rolling, hold the place on the label guide indicated in the illustration nearby. 5. Turning the Power on and off After preparations, turn on the power. (1) Slide the power switch to ON, and the status indicator lights up in green. Turning the Power on and off 5 (2) Slide the power switch to OFF and the status indicator goes off.
6. Starting the Printer 6 There are two modes for printing: the Continuous mode and the Dispense mode. Test printing and On-line printing can be done on both modes.

6 Starting the Printer • The IrDA allowable distance is 15 to 20 cms at the maximum. * Varies from the environment where printer is used. Under direct sunlight or strong lighting, it may not be possible to make IrDA transmittal. Should this happen, cover the IrDA filter to interrupt the light, or bring the IrDA filters to contact together.
Test Printing Mode (1) Press the power switch to ON while pressing the Feed key to turn to the Test mode. To start test printing, press the Feed key again. Feed key (2) Check the following after the test printing: * Is the thermal head off or in place ? * Is the printing in good condition ? During test printing, the full battery is indicated as . When the indicator shows , recharge the battery. * Contact your nearest dealer or Customer Service Center for any problems.
7. Trouble Shooting 7 The status of the printer is indicated on the status indicator. Abnormalities of the status is indicated as below. To solve the problems, follow the directions in the table. 8. Daily Maintenance 8 After pressing the power key to turn the printer off and removing the battery pack, follow the directions below. Daily Maintenance Cleaning the Thermal Head (1) Open the cover by sliding the cover open/close lever. (2) Wipe clean with cloth and alcohol. * Do not use thinners, benzene, or kerosene. Cleaning the Platen/Dispense Rollers (1) Open the cover by sliding the cover open/close lever. (2) Wipe clean with cloth and alcohol. * Do not use thinners, benzene, or kerosene.

Non-separated Labels Use to print on labels without the adhesive. (2) Follow step 1 of the directions on the Dispense mode on page 25. (3) Pick up the corner of the sheet and pull upward. The label will cut along the perforated line. * Number of sheets that can be printed on this function will differ from the Continuous / Dispense mode. * Should the Non-separated label tear other than at the perforated lines, and the printing is improper, perform the procedures on page 44.
9 When the next printing is not performed (1) Press the Print key while on-line, and turn the printer off-line Reference (2) Press the Feed key and forward the sheet. (3) When the sheet stops, cut along the perforated line. Print key Feed key (4) Press the Print key and go back to on-line status.
