High pressure coolant (HPC)
Most machines now offer a HPC capability around
70 bars. The benets are great for both turning and
drilling operations and offer quick payback due to
increased machine utilization and increased metal
cutting efciency. Chip ‘bird nests’ around tools and
‘bailing’ in the conveyor account for a high percentage
of all machine stoppages.
The system requirements to consider are:-
Filter – 20 microns.
Pressure – the pressure requirement to break
the chip varies depending upon the material and
the cutting parameters but 70 bars is adequate
for most applications.
Flow – the ow required is driven by the number
and diameter of coolant outlets.
Turning - Using CoroTurn HP the ow requirement
of 20 litres/min.
Drilling - with internal through coolant
Through coolant helps with chip evacuation pre
venting chip jamming in the ute. The coolant hole
diameters increase with the drill diameter mean
ing that a higher ow rate is needed for larger
diameter drills. A variable pressure pump is
recommended.
