To install the SIM or USIM card and battery, 1 2 If the phone is on, press and hold [ 3 Insert the SIM or USIM card. ] to turn it off. Turn the screw anti-clockwise to unlock the back cover, and then remove the cover. • Place the SIM or USIM card into the phone with the gold-coloured contacts facing down. • If you do not insert a SIM or USIM card, you can only use your phone’s non-network services and some menus. Do not use your fingernails to unscrew. Use a coin or screw driver, instead.
5 Replace the back cover and turn the screw clockwise to lock the cover. Charge the battery Before using the phone for the first time, you must charge the battery. You can charge the phone with the provided travel adapter or by connecting the phone to a PC with a PC data cable. Use only Samsung-approved chargers and cables. Unauthorised chargers or cables can cause batteries to explode or damage your phone. Ensure the cover is completely closed and the screw is tightly fastened to avoid water damage.
›› Charge with the travel adapter 1 2 3 Plug the large end of the travel adapter into a power outlet. • You can use the phone while it is charging, but it may take longer to fully charge the battery. • While charging, the phone may heat up. This is normal and should not affect your phone’s lifespan or performance. • If your phone is not working properly, bring your phone and the charger to a Samsung Service Centre.
›› Charge with the PC data cable Before charging, ensure that your PC is turned on. 1 2 3 4 Open the cover to the multifunction jack on the side of the phone. Plug one end (micro-USB) of the PC data cable into the multifunction jack. Connect the other end of the PC data cable into a USB port on a PC. Depending on the type of PC data cable you are using, it may take some time before charging begins.
1 2 Turn the screw anti-clockwise to unlock the cover, and then remove the cover. Insert a memory card with the gold-coloured contacts facing down. 4 5 2 Gently push the memory card down, and then slide it backward until it locks in place. Replace the back cover and turn the screw clockwise to lock the cover. ›› Remove the memory card 1 3 Insert the battery. 3 Ensure that the memory card is not in the middle of an operation.
›› Format the memory card Formatting your memory card on a PC may cause incompatibilities with your phone. Format the memory card only on the phone. In Menu mode, select Settings → Memory → Memory card → Format memory card → . Before formatting the memory card, remember to make backup copies of all important data stored in your phone. The manufacturer’s warranty does not cover loss of data resulting user actions.
Getting started Turn your phone on and off To turn on your phone, 1 2 3 Press and hold [ ]. Enter your PIN and press (if necessary). When the setup wizard opens, customise your phone as desired by following the screen. To turn off your phone, repeat step 1 above. • Follow all posted warnings and directions from official personnel when in areas where the use of wireless devices is restricted, such as aeroplanes and hospitals.
›› Maintain your water and dust resistant feature Your phone offers limited protection against accidental exposure to water in some conditions, but you should never intentionally immerse the phone in water. Flash key Speaker Camera lens Multifunction jack Back cover • Do not expose your phone to high water pressures or any other liquids, such as salt water, ionized water or dirty water. • If the phone gets wet, dry it thoroughly with a clean soft cloth.
• Always keep the back cover and multifunction jack cover and the area around them clean and be careful to avoid damaging them. If the back cover or multifunction jack cover become contaminated, they may not provide protection from dust and water. Key Function Dial • Any service performed on the phone may reduce the water and dust protection. Avoid exposing the phone to dust and water if any service has been performed on it.

Lock or unlock the keys Customise your phone You can lock the keys to prevent any unwanted phone operations. To lock the keys, press and hold [ ]. To unlock these keys, press and hold [ ]. Get more from your phone by customising it to match your preferences. When the auto keypad lock is on, the keys will be locked automatically after the display turns off. Access menus To access your phone’s menus, 1 2 3 4 In Idle mode, press
›› Switch to the silent profile In Idle mode, press and hold [ ] to mute or unmute your phone. ›› Set up a sound profile You can change your phone's sounds by customising the current sound profile or switching to another sound profile. To set up a profile, 1 2 3 4 In Menu mode, select Settings → Sound profiles. 5 Press . Scroll to the profile you are using. Press . Customise the sound options for incoming calls, incoming messages, and other phone sounds.
›› Set menu shortcuts 1 2 3 3 Select the items to display on the smart home screen. Available items may vary depending on your region or service provider. 4 Press , or press → Save. If you select Dual clock, you can set the second clock. In Menu mode, select Settings → Phone → Shortcuts. Select a key to use as a shortcut. Select a menu to assign to the shortcut key. When you are using the smart home screen, the Navigation key does not work as shortcuts.
3 4 5 6 Scroll to Shortcuts toolbar and press → Edit shortcuts. 3 Select a menu to change or an empty location. Select the menus you want. Press → Open to select submenus (if necessary). Once the phone lock is enabled, you must enter the password each time you turn on the phone. • If you forget your password, bring your phone to a Press , or press → Save. 2 Enter the PIN of your SIM or USIM card and press . Once the PIN lock is enabled, you must enter the PIN each time you turn on the phone. • If you enter an incorrect PIN too many times, your SIM or USIM card will be blocked. You must enter a PIN unlock key (PUK) to unblock the SIM or USIM card. • If you block your SIM or USIM card by entering an incorrect PUK, bring the card to your service provider to unblock it.
Enter text Enter text using input methods You can enter text by pressing keys on the keypad. Mode Change the text input method ABC Available text input modes may vary depending on your region. • Press and hold [ ] and select Writing language to select a writing language. • Press and hold [ ] and select Input method (Abc) to select an input mode. • Press [ ] to change case or switch between English and Number input modes. • Press [ ] to switch to Symbol mode.
Communication 3 Calling Learn to use calling functions, such as making and answering calls using options available during a call, or customising and using call-related features. Answer a call 1 When a call comes in, press [ ]. When the phone is ringing, press [ / ] to adjust the volume, or press and hold [ ] to mute the ringtone. In Idle mode, enter an area code and a phone number. 2 Press [ ] to dial the number. For a video call, press → Video call.
Reject a call When a call comes in, press [ busy tone. ]. Call an international number 1 2 ›› Use options during a voice call You can use the following options while a voice call is in progress: • To adjust the voice volume, press [ / ].
›› View and dial missed calls Your phone will display calls you have missed on the display. To dial the number of a missed call, 1 2 3 Press the Confirm key to open the call log. Scroll to the missed call you want to dial. Press [ ] to dial. ›› Use additional features You can use various other call-related features, such as auto rejection, fake calls, or Fixed Dialling Number (FDN) mode. Set auto rejection Use auto rejection to reject calls from certain numbers automatically.
You can change the delay time before fake calls. In Menu mode, select Settings → Call → Fake call → Fake call timer. You can make fake calls appear more realistic by playing back a recorded voice. To record a voice, 1 2 3 4 5 6 In Menu mode, select Settings → Call → Fake call → Fake call voice. Scroll to Fake call voice. Press . Use Fixed Dialling Number (FDN) mode In FDN mode, your phone will restrict outgoing calls, except for the numbers stored in the FDN list.
›› View call and message logs 2 1 2 3 3 You can view logs of your calls and messages filtered by their types. In Menu mode, select Comms. → Logs. Scroll left or right to select a log type. Select a log to view its details. From the detail view, you can dial the number, send a message to the number or add the number to the phonebook or reject list.
Option Function Message counter View the number of messages you have sent or received. View the amount of data you have sent or received. Data counter You can reset the records in the log manager. Press or the Confirm key depending on the screen you are viewing. Messages Learn to create and send text (SMS) or multimedia (MMS) messages and view or manage messages you have sent or received. You may incur additional charges for sending or receiving messages while outside your home service area.
2 Select the connection profile. 1 2 In Menu mode, select Messages → Create message. ›› Send a multimedia message 3 4 5 6 Press the Confirm key and select Contacts. You can enter a number or an email address manually or select one from the logs or contact groups by scrolling left or right. Scroll to a contact and press the Confirm key. When you enter an email address, the phone will ask if you want to send a multimedia message. Press to confirm. Scroll down and enter your message text.
›› Listen to voice mail messages If you have set missed calls to be diverted to the voice mail server, callers may leave voice messages when you do not answer incoming calls. To access your voice mail box and listen to voice mail messages, 1 2 In Idle mode, press and hold [1]. Follow the instructions from the voice mail server. You must save the voice mail server number before accessing the server. Your service provider can give you the number.
›› Create a folder to manage messages Learn to create folders to manage your messages according to your preferences and needs. 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select Messages → My folders. Press → Create folder. Enter a new folder name and press the Confirm key. You can now move your important messages from the inbox or sentbox to a custom folder for easier management or preventing them from accidental deletion.
To send an SOS message, the keys must be locked. Press [ / ] 4 times. Once you send an SOS message, all phone functions will be suspended until you press [ ]. Email Learn to create and send email messages, and view or manage messages you have sent or received. ›› Set up an email account In addition to the email account predefined by your service provider, you can add your personal email accounts. 1 2 3 4 In Menu mode, select Email → . Select an email service or other email accounts.

Entertainment 3 Camera 4 5 Learn how to capture and view photos and videos. You can capture photos at resolutions up to 1600 x 1200 pixels (2 megapixels) and videos at resolutions up to 160 x 128 pixels. ›› Capture a photo 1 2 In Menu mode, select Camera to turn on the camera. Rotate the phone anti-clockwise to landscape view. • The camera interface appears only in the landscape orientation. • The camera automatically turns off when you do not use it for a specified period.
›› Capture a photo in Smile shot mode Your camera can recognise people’s faces and help you capture photos of their smiling faces. 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select Camera to turn on the camera. 4 5 6 Make any necessary adjustments. Rotate the phone anti-clockwise to landscape view. Press → Shooting mode → Smile → . Press the Confirm key. Aim the camera lens at your subject. Your phone recognises people in an image and detects their smiles.
›› Record a video 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 In Menu mode, select Camera to turn on the camera. Rotate the phone anti-clockwise to landscape view. Media browser Learn to view photos and play videos saved in your phone's memory and memory card. • Some file formats are not supported depending To switch to the camcorder, press → Mode → Camcorder. Aim the lens at the subject and make any necessary adjustments. Press [ / ] to zoom in or out. Press the Confirm key to start recording.

In Menu mode, select Apps → Media browser. Select a category → → Slide show. Rotate the phone to anti-clockwise to landscape view. Music Learn to listen to your favourite music while on the go with the music player.
Key Function Navigation • Up: Access the playlist. • Down: Change the repeat mode. • Left: Skip backward; Scan backward in a file (press and hold). • Right: Skip forward; Scan forward in a file (press and hold). ›› Create a playlist 1 2 3 4 5 6 In Menu mode, select Music → Library → Playlists. Press → Create playlist. Enter a title for your new playlist and press the Confirm key. ›› Find information of music Learn to access an online music service to get information about a song.
FM radio Key Learn to listen to music and news on the FM radio. To listen to the FM radio, you must connect the supplied headset, which serves as the radio antenna. Volume Navigation 4 To get information about a song you hear on the FM radio, press → Find music. ► p. 41 To add the current radio station to the favourites list, press → Add to → Favourites. In Menu mode, select Apps → FM radio.
4 Press to confirm. The FM radio scans and saves available stations automatically. ›› Set programme reminders Games and more Learn to use games and applications powered by awardwinning Java technology. The download of Java games or applications may not be supported depending on the software of the phone. You can set the phone to alert you to listen to the radio at a specified time. 1 2 3 4 5 Plug the supplied headset into the phone. In Menu mode, select Apps → FM radio.
›› Play games or launch applications 1 2 In Menu mode, select Apps → Games and more. Select a game or application from the list and follow the on-screen instructions. • Available games or applications may vary depending on your region or service provider. • Controls and options of games or applications may vary.
Personal information Contacts If you are saving the contact on a SIM or USIM card, you can save only the contact’s name and a phone number. 4 Press the Confirm key to add the contact to memory. Learn to create and manage a list of your personal or business contacts stored on the phone’s memory or a SIM or USIM card. You can save names, mobile phone numbers, home phone numbers, email addresses, birthdays and more for your contacts. You can also create a contact from the dialling screen.
›› Find a contact 1 2 3 Enter the first letter of the name you want. Select the contact’s name from the contact list. Once you found a contact, you can: • call the contact by pressing [ ]. • edit the contact information by pressing the Confirm key. ›› Set a favourite number 1 2 3 4 You can now call this contact from Idle mode by pressing and holding the corresponding the assigned favourite number. In Menu mode, select Contacts. In Menu mode, select Contacts. Scroll to a contact to assign.
Calendar Learn to create and manage daily, weekly or monthly events. ›› Create an event 1 2 3 4 In Menu mode, select Organiser → Calendar. Press → Create → an event type. 1 2 In Menu mode, select Organiser → Calendar. 3 Select an event to view its details. Select a date on the calendar. On the calendar, the dates with scheduled events are indicated with a triangle. Enter the details of the event as required. Task Press the Confirm key.
›› View tasks 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select Organiser → Task. Press → List by and select a category (priority, status, or due date) to sort the tasks. Select a task to view its details. For completed tasks with an expired deadline, you can set their status to completed. You will not be reminded of those tasks any longer. Memo Learn to record important information to save and view at a later date. ›› Create a memo 1 In Menu mode, select Organiser → Memo.

Web 1 Internet 2 3 Learn to access and bookmark your favourite web pages. • You may incur additional charges for accessing the web and downloading media. For details, contact your service provider. • The web browser menu may be labelled differently depending on your service provider. • Available icons may vary depending on your region or service provider. ›› Set up an internet profile To access the network and connect to the internet, you must activate a connection profile.
If you know the web address of the web page, you can manually add a bookmark offline. To add a bookmark, 1 2 3 In Menu mode, select Internet → → Bookmarks → → Add bookmark. The steps you must select to use this feature may differ depending on your region. Enter a page title and a web address (URL). Press the Confirm key. ›› Use the RSS reader Learn to use the RSS reader to receive the latest news and information from your favourite websites.

Select a synchronisation profile. Press to start synchronisation with the web server you have specified.
3 4 Press to confirm that you agree to the general disclaimer. The first time you access the menu, you will be prompted to confirm. Select the website or blog you want to add and press . If you select → Update lists, new websites or blogs are added to the list automatically. ›› Share a file To upload or view photos and videos, you must have accounts with photo sharing websites and blogs. 1 2 In Menu mode, select Comms. → Communities.
Connectivity Bluetooth Bluetooth is a short-range wireless communications technology capable of exchanging information over a distance of about 10 metres without requiring a physical connection. ›› Turn on the Bluetooth wireless feature 1 2 3 • Samsung is not responsible for the loss, interception, or misuse of data sent or received via the Bluetooth wireless feature. • Always ensure that you share and receive data with devices that are trusted and properly secured.
3 Enter a PIN for the Bluetooth wireless feature or the other device’s Bluetooth PIN, if it has one, and press . Alternatively, press to match the PIN between your phone and the device. When the owner of the other device enters the same PIN or accepts the connection, pairing is complete. If the pairing is successful, the device will automatically search for available services. Once the phone is paired with another Bluetooth-enabled device, the device icon will turn blue.
›› Receive data using the Bluetooth 2 1 3 4 2 wireless feature Enter the PIN for the Bluetooth wireless feature and press (if necessary). Press to confirm that you are willing to receive data from the device (if necessary). Received data is saved to an appropriate application or folder according to its type. For example, a music or sound clip is saved to the sound folder and a contact to the phonebook.
GPS Your device is equipped with a global positioning system (GPS) receiver. Learn to find your location and customise the GPS setting. This feature may be unavailable depending on your region or service provider.
1 2 3 4 In Menu mode, select Settings → PC connections → Samsung Kies. Press [ ] to return to Idle mode. Using an optional PC data cable, connect the multifunction jack on your phone to a PC. Run Samsung Kies and copy data and files. ›› Connect as a mass storage device You can connect your phone to a PC as a removable disk and access the file directory. If you insert a memory card in the phone, you can also access the file directory of the memory card by using the phone as a memory card reader.
3 4 5 6 7 Using an optional PC data cable, connect the multifunction jack on your phone to a PC with Windows Media Player installed. When connected, a pop-up window will appear on the PC. Open Windows Media Player to synchronise music files. Edit or enter your phone’s name in the pop-up window (if necessary). Select and drag the music files you want to the sync list. Start synchronisation.
Tools ›› Stop an alarm Alarms • Press to stop the alarm. • Press to silence the alarm for the snooze Learn to set and control alarms for important events. ›› Set a new alarm 1 2 3 4 In Menu mode, select Organiser → Alarms. Press . Set alarm details. When you are finished, press . The auto power-up feature sets the phone to automatically turn on and sound the alarm at the designated time when the phone is turned off. When the alarm sounds, period.
Compass 1 In Menu mode, select Apps → Compass. 2 If you use the compass for the first time, press and calibrate it by moving your phone as shown on the screen. To use the compass, hold the phone flat in your palm, parallel to the ground and read the direction. • Remove any metal jewellery and avoid coming too close to metal objects or places that affect the compass magnet. This may affect the accuracy of the direction reading. • THE COMPASS PROVIDES GENERAL MEASUREMENTS FOR PERSONAL USE.
6 7 8 To apply a blur effect to a specific area of an image, select Partial blur, move or resize the rectangle, and press the Confirm key. When you are finished, press → Save. Select a memory location (if necessary). Enter a new file name for the image and press the Confirm key. ›› Adjust an image 1 2 3 4 5 Open an image to edit. Press the Confirm key to edit the image. Select Adjust → an adjustment option (brightness, contrast, or colour). Adjust the image as desired and press .
5 Save the edited image with a new file name. 1 2 3 Open an image to edit. ›› Insert a visual feature 4 5 6 Press the Confirm key to edit the image. Select Insert → a visual feature type (text, frame, emoticon, clip art, or image). Select a visual feature, or enter text and press the Confirm key. Move or resize the visual feature and press the Confirm key. Save the edited image with a new file name.
›› View a file 1 2 In Menu mode, select My files → a file type. Folders or files on the memory card are indicated by a memory card icon. Select a folder → a file. • In Images, you can view photos you have captured and images you have downloaded or received from other sources. • In Videos, you can play videos you have captured and ones you have downloaded or received from other sources.
Stopwatch 1 In Menu mode, select Apps → Stopwatch. 2 Press to begin the stopwatch. 3 Press the Confirm key to record lap times. 4 When you are finished, press . 5 Press to clear recorded times. While recording the lap times, the interval between lap times is recorded. To check the interval, select Lap. Timer 1 In Menu mode, select Apps → Timer. 2 Set the length of time to count down. 66 Tools 3 4 Press to begin the countdown.
›› Create a world clock 1 2 3 Press → . 4 To add more world clocks, repeat steps 2-3. In Menu mode, select Organiser → World clock. 4 5 6 Scroll left or right to Smart idle. Press → Dual clock. Press → Save. Enter a city name or select one from the city list. The world clock is set as the second clock. ›› Add a world clock to your display With the dual clock widget, you can view clocks with two different time zones on your display.
Settings Access the Settings menu 1 In Menu mode, select Settings. 2 Select a setting category and select an option. 3 Customise the setting and press or press the Confirm key. Sound profiles Select a sound profile to use or customise sound options in profiles as desired. Display Access and alter the following settings to control the display and usage of light on your phone. 68 Settings • Wallpaper: Select a background image for the idle screen.
Phone Access and alter the following settings to control general settings for your phone: • Language: Select a language to use on the phone’s display and text input. • Shortcuts: Customise the shortcut keys. ► p. 22 • Keypad auto-lock: Set the phone to automatically lock the keypad. • Keypad light: Set the length of time the phone waits before turning off the keypad's backlight. • GPS: Customise the settings related with GPS connections.
Security • Change PIN2: Change the PIN2, which is used to protect Access and alter the following settings to secure your phone and data: • Mobile tracker: Activate or deactivate the mobile • Phone lock: Activate or deactivate the phone lock • • • • • • feature to require a phone password before using the phone. Memory Access and alter the following settings to control your phone’s memory use: • Memory card: Access details about your memory card and set Bluetooth visibility for files in the memory card. You can also format the memory card or change the memory card’s name.
Troubleshooting When you turn on your phone or while you are using the phone, it prompts you to enter one of the following codes: Code Try this to solve the problem: Password When the phone lock feature is enabled, you must enter the password you set for the phone. PIN When using the phone for the first time or when the PIN requirement is enabled, you must enter the PIN supplied with the SIM or USIM card. You can disable this feature by using the PIN lock menu.
