Assembling and preparing your mobile phone Get started by assembling and setting up your mobile phone for its first use. Install the SIM card and battery 1. Remove the back cover and insert the SIM card. Back cover SIM card 2. Insert the battery and replace the back cover.
Charge the battery 1. Plug the small end of the supplied travel adapter into the multifunction jack. 2. Plug the large end of the travel adapter into a power outlet. 3. When charging is finished, unplug the travel adapter. Do not remove the battery from the phone before unplugging the travel adapter first. Otherwise, the phone may be damaged.
Insert a memory card (optional) Your phone accepts microSD™ or microSDHC™ memory cards up to 8 GB (depending on memory card manufacturer and type). • Formatting the memory card on a PC may cause incompatibility with your phone. Format the memory card only on the phone. • Frequent writing and erasing of data will shorten the lifespan of memory cards. 1. Open the cover to the memory card slot on the left side of the phone. 2. Insert a memory card with the gold-coloured contacts facing up. 3.
Using basic functions Learn how to perform basic operations and use the main features of your mobile phone. Turn your phone on or off To turn your phone on, 1. Press and hold [ ]. 2. Enter your PIN and press (if necessary). 3. When the setup wizard opens, customise your phone as desired by following the screen. To turn your phone off, repeat step 1 above. Access menus To access your phone's menus, 1. In Idle mode, press

Use basic call functions To make a call 1. In Idle mode, enter an area code and a phone number. 2.
2. To end the call, press [ ]. To adjust the volume of voice during a call While a call is in progress, press the Navigation key up or down to adjust the volume. To use the speakerphone feature 1. During a call, press the Confirm key → to activate the speaker. 2. To switch back to the earpiece, press the Confirm key again. In noisy environments, you may have difficulty hearing the calls while using the speakerphone feature. For better audio performance, use the normal phone mode.
Send and view messages To send a text or multimedia message 1. In Menu mode, select Messages → Create message. 2. Enter a recipient number and scroll down. 3. Enter your message text. ► p. 19 For sending as a text message, skip to step 5. For attaching multimedia, continue with step 4. 4. Press → Add multimedia and add an item. 5. Press the Confirm key to send the message. To view text or multimedia messages 1. In Menu mode, select Messages → Inbox. 2. Select a text or multimedia message.
Enter text You can enter text by pressing keys on the keypad. Available text input modes may vary depending on your region. To change the text input mode • Press and hold [ ] to switch between T9 and ABC modes. • Press [ ] to change case or switch to Number mode. • Press [ ] to switch to Symbol mode. • Press and hold [ ] to select an input mode or change the input language. T9 mode 1. Press appropriate alphanumeric keys to enter an entire word. 2.
Number mode Press an appropriate alphanumeric key to enter a number. Symbol mode Press an appropriate alphanumeric key to enter a symbol. • To move the cursor, press the Navigation key. • To delete characters one by one, press . To quickly delete characters, press and hold . • To insert a space between characters, press [0]. • To enter punctuation marks, press [1]. Add and find contacts The memory location to save new contacts may be preset depending on your service provider.
2. Select Add to Contacts → Create contact → a memory location (if necessary). 3. Select a number type (if necessary). 4. Enter contact information. 5. Press the Confirm key to add the contact to memory. To find a contact 1. In Menu mode, select Contacts. 2. Enter the first few letters of the name you want to find. 3. Select the contact’s name from the contact list. Use basic camera functions To capture photos 1. In Menu mode, select Camera to turn on the camera. 2.
To view photos In Menu mode, select My files → Images → a photo file. To capture videos 1. In Menu mode, select Camera to turn on the camera. 2. Press → Camcorder to switch to the camcorder. 3. Aim the lens at the subject and make any adjustments. 4. Press the Confirm key to start recording. 5. Press to stop recording. The video is saved automatically. To view videos In Menu mode, select My files → Videos → a video file.
Listen to music To listen to the FM radio 1. Plug the supplied headset into the phone. 2. In Menu mode, select Apps → FM radio. 3. Press the Confirm key to start the FM radio. 4. Press to start automatic tuning. The radio scans and saves available stations automatically. The first time you turn on the FM radio, you will be prompted to start automatic tuning. 5.

Browse the web The web browser menu may be labelled differently depending on your service provider. To browse web pages 1. In Menu mode, select Internet to launch your service provider’s homepage. 2. Use advanced call functions To view and dial missed calls Your phone will display calls you have missed on the display. To dial the number of a missed call, 1. Press . 2. Scroll to the missed call you want to dial. 3. Press [ ] to dial. To call a recently dialled number 1. In Idle mode, press [ ]. 2. Scroll left or right to a call type. 3.
To hold a call or retrieve a held call Press to place a call on hold or press to retrieve a held call. To dial a second call If your network supports this function, you can dial another number during a call: 1. Press to place the first call on hold. 2. Enter the second number to dial and press [ ]. 3. Press to switch between the two calls. To answer a second call If your network supports this function, you can answer a second incoming call: 1.
To make a multiparty call (conference call) 1. Call the first party you want to add to the multiparty call. 2. While connected to the first party, call the second party. The first party is automatically placed on hold. 3. When connected to the second party, press → Join. To call an international number 1. In Idle mode, press and hold [0] to insert the + character. 2. Enter the complete number you want to dial (country code, area code, and phone number), and then press [ ] to dial.
To reject a call To reject an incoming call, press [ will hear a busy tone. ]. The caller To reject calls from certain numbers automatically, use auto rejection. To activate auto rejection and set up the reject list, 1. In Menu mode, select Settings → Call → All calls → Auto reject. 2. Press the Confirm key to activate auto rejection. 3. Scroll down and select Reject list. 4. Press → Create. 5. Enter a number to reject. 6. Press the Confirm key. 7.
Use advanced phonebook functions To create your namecard 1. In Menu mode, select Contacts. 2. Press → Settings → My namecard. 3. Enter your personal details and press the Confirm key. To create a group of contacts 1. In Menu mode, select Contacts → Groups. 2. Press → Create group. 3. Enter a group name and press the Confirm key. 4. To set a group ringtone, press → Group ringtone → the Confirm key. 5. Select a ringtone category → a ringtone.
Use advanced messaging functions To create a text template 1. In Menu mode, select Messages → My folders → Templates. 2. Press to open a new template window. 3. Enter your text and press the Confirm key to save the template. To insert text templates in new messages 1. In Menu mode, select Messages → Create message. 2. In the text input field, press → Add text → Template → a template. To use the instant messenger 1. In Menu mode, select Comms. → Instant messenger. 2.
To use the Bluetooth messenger 1. In Menu mode, select Comms. → Bluetooth messenger. 2. Press the Confirm key. 3. Press to turn on the Bluetooth wireless feature (if necessary). 4. Press . 5. Select a device. 6. Enter a PIN for the Bluetooth wireless feature or the other device's Bluetooth PIN, or press to send the message. Use advanced camera functions To capture photos with decorative frames 1. In Menu mode, select Camera to turn on the camera. 2.

Use advanced music functions To copy music files via Samsung Kies 1. In Menu mode, select Settings → PC connections → Samsung Kies or Mass storage. 2. Using a PC data cable, connect the multifunction jack on your phone to a PC. 3. Run Samsung Kies and copy files from the PC to the phone. To transfer data from a PC to your phone, you need Windows XP Service Pack 2. To copy music files to a memory card 1. Insert a memory card. 2. In Menu mode, select Settings → PC connections → Mass storage. 3.
To create a playlist 1. In Menu mode, select Music → Library → Playlists. 2. Press . 3. Enter a title for your new playlist and press the Confirm key. 4. Select the new playlist. 5. Press → → Tracks. 6. Select the files you want to include and press . To customise your music player settings 1. In Menu mode, select Music → Settings → Player settings. 2. Adjust the settings to customise your music player. 3. Press .
To record songs from the FM radio 1. In Menu mode, select Apps → FM radio. 2. Press the Confirm key to start the FM radio. 3. Select a radio station you want. 4. Press → Record to start recording. 5. When you are finished recording, press . To set up your favourite station list 1. In Menu mode, select Apps → FM radio. 2. Select a radio station to add to the favourite station list. 3. Press → Add to → Favourites. 4. Select an empty location you want to set.
Using tools and applications Learn how to work with your mobile phone’s tools and additional applications Use the Bluetooth wireless feature To turn on the Bluetooth wireless feature 1. In Menu mode, select Apps → Bluetooth. 2. Press → Settings. 3. Scroll left or right to On. 4. To allow other devices to locate your phone, select On under My phone's visibility → a visibility option. If you selected Custom, set duration that your phone is visible. 5. Press .
3. Select a device. 4. Enter a PIN for the Bluetooth wireless feature or the other device’s Bluetooth PIN, if it has one, and press . When the owner of the other device enters the same code or accepts the connection, pairing is complete. You may not need to enter a PIN depending on the device. To send data using the Bluetooth wireless feature 1. Select the file or item from one of your phone’s applications that you want to send. 2.
Activate and send an SOS message In an emergency, you can send SOS messages to your family or friends for help. To activate the SOS message 1. In Menu mode, select Messages → Settings → SOS messages → Sending options. 2. Scroll left or right to On. 3. Scroll down and press the Confirm key to open the recipient list. 4. Press → Search to open your contact list. 5. Select a contact. 6. Select a number (if necessary). 7.
To send an SOS message 1. With the phone closed and the key locked, press [ / ] four times to send an SOS message to preset numbers. The phone switches to SOS mode and sends the preset SOS message. 2. To exit SOS mode, press [ ]. Activate the mobile tracker When someone inserts a new SIM card in your phone, the mobile tracker feature will automatically send the contact number to specified recipients to help you locate and recover your phone. 1.

Record and play voice memos To record a voice memo 1. In Menu mode, select Apps → Voice recorder. 2. Press the Confirm key to start recording. 3. Speak your memo into the microphone. 4. When you are finished speaking, press . To play a voice memo 1. From the voice recorder screen, press → Go to My voice clips. 2. Select a file. View photos and videos on the web Learn to access photo sharing websites and blogs and view photos and videos.
Use Java-powered games and applications 1. In Menu mode, select Apps → Games and more. 2. Select a game or application from the list and follow the on-screen instructions. • The download of Java games or applications may not be supported depending on the software of the phone. • Available games may vary depending on your service provider or region. Game controls and options may vary. Create a world clock 1. In Menu mode, select Organiser → World clock. 2. Press . 3.
Set and use alarms Learn to set and control alarms for important events. To set a new alarm 1. In Menu mode, select Alarms. 2. Press . 3. Set the details of the alarm. 4. Press . To stop an alarm When the alarm sounds, • Press or the Confirm key to stop the alarm. • Press to silence the alarm for the snooze period. To deactivate an alarm 1. In Menu mode, select Alarms. 2. Select the alarm you want to deactivate. 3. Scroll to Alarm activation. 4.
Use the calculator 1. In Menu mode, select Organiser → Calculator. 2. Use the keys that corresponds to the calculator display to perform basic mathematical operations. Convert currencies or measurements 1. In Menu mode, select Organiser → Convertor → a conversion type. 2. Enter the currencies measurements and units in the appropriate fields. Set a countdown timer 1. In Menu mode, select Apps → Timer. 2. Enter the time to count down and press . 3.
Use the stopwatch 1. In Menu mode, select Apps → Stopwatch. 2. Press to begin the stopwatch. 3. Press the Confirm key to record lap times. 4. When you are finished, press . 5. Press to clear recorded times. While recording the lap times, the interval between lap times is recorded. To check the interval, scroll left or right to Split. Create a text memo 1. In Menu mode, select Organiser → Memo. 2. Press . 3. Enter your memo text and press the Confirm key.
Manage your calendar To change the calendar view 1. In Menu mode, select Organiser → Calendar. 2. Press → View by week or View by month. To create an event 1. In Menu mode, select Organiser → Calendar. 2. Press → Create → an event type. 3. Enter the details of the event as required. 4. Press . To view events 1. In Menu mode, select Organiser → Calendar. 2. Select a date on the calendar. 3. Select an event to view its details.
Back up your data Use Backup manager to back up your data, such as messages, contacts, and tasks to your memory card or My files. If necessary, you can restore them to your phone. To back up your data 1. In Menu mode, select Settings → Backup manager. 2. Select Backup. 3. Select a category and select items to back up. 4. Press . To restore your data 1. In Menu mode, select Settings → Backup manager. 2. Select Register. 3. Select a category and select items to restore. 4. Press .
Troubleshooting When you turn on your phone or while you are using the phone, it prompts you to enter one of the following codes: Code Try this to solve the problem: Password When the phone lock feature is enabled, you must enter the password you set for the phone. PIN When using the phone for the first time or when the PIN requirement is enabled, you must enter the PIN supplied with the SIM card. You can disable this feature by using the PIN lock menu.
Your phone displays "Service unavailable" or "Network error" • When you are in areas with weak signals or poor reception, you may lose reception. Move to another area and try again. • You cannot access some options without a subscription. Contact your service provider for more details. Calls are being dropped When you are in areas with weak signals or poor reception, you may lose your connection to the network. Move to another area and try again.
Others cannot hear you speaking on a call • Ensure that you are not covering the built-in microphone. • Ensure that the microphone is close to your mouth. • If using a headset, ensure that it is properly connected. Audio quality is poor • Ensure that you are not blocking the phone's internal antenna. • When you are in areas with weak signals or poor reception, you may lose reception. Move to another area and try again.
The battery does not charge properly or the phone turns off • The battery terminals may be dirty. Wipe both goldcoloured contacts with a clean, soft cloth and try charging the battery again. • If the battery will no longer charge completely, dispose of the old battery properly and replace it with a new battery (refer to your local ordinances for proper disposal instructions).
Error messages appear when launching the FM radio The FM radio application on your Samsung mobile phone uses the headset cable as an antenna. Without a headset connected, the FM radio will be unable to receive radio stations. To use the FM radio, first ensure that the headset is properly connected. Next, scan for and save the available radio stations. If you still cannot use the FM radio after performing these steps, try accessing your desired station with another radio receiver.
Another Bluetooth device is not located • Ensure that the Bluetooth wireless feature is activated on your phone. • Ensure that the Bluetooth wireless feature is activated on the device you wish to connect to, if necessary. • Ensure that your phone and the other Bluetooth device are within the maximum Bluetooth range (10 metres/30 feet). If the tips above do not solve the problem, contact a Samsung Service Centre.

The phone may be forced to boost its power to compensate, leading to an increase in RF absorption.
