3. Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Calibration
a. Ensure the battery is fully charged and the fuel
pump disabled.
b. Plug the S&S
®
VFI Module into the wiring
harness and attach a laptop to the VFI
Module using the communications cable
included with the module. Connect the
battery cables to the battery.
c. Turn the idle stop screw counter-clockwise until
it no longer contacts the throttle spool idle stop,
and then turn an additional full turn counter-
clockwise.
d. Open the throttle to wide and open and release it,
allowing the throttle plates to snap shut to the fully
closed position. Do this a total of three times.
e. Turn on the ignition and the laptop and bring up
the Pro Tune II software. On the top left part of
the Pro Tune II screen click on the TABLE pull-
down and choose Real Time Inputs Only. Click
on the FROM pull-down and choose Motorcycle
ECU on COM 1. Look at the Throttle Angle (V)
box, which displays TPS voltage.
NOTE: The battery MUST be fully charged to accurately
perform the TPS calibration.
f. With the throttle plates in fully closed position,
rotate the TPS until .30 volts are indicated. If a
laptop is not available, use a volt meter and probe
the Gray/Violet (+) and Black/White (-) wires that
connect to the TPS. Firmly hold the TPS and
tighten the screws to 1.5 ft.-lbs., (18 in-lbs.)
Recheck the voltage after retightening the screws
and readjust if necessary.
g. Turn the idle stop screw clockwise to achieve a
TPS voltage reading of .42 volts.
h.
Open the throttle to wide and open and release it,
allowing the throttle spool to contact the idle stop
screw. Do this several times to ensure the
voltage consistently reads .42 volts at idle.
Readjust the idle screw if necessary
.
i. Turn off ignition and disconnect battery.
4. Throttle Cable Installation
NOTE - Throttle grip assembly must work freely to prevent
possible sticking during operation. Throttle must snap closed
when released. Cable routing must be free of tight bends to
minimize friction between cable and housing.
If throttle does not work freely, it may inadvertently stick
open possibly causing loss of control of motorcycle and
personal injury to operator or others.
a. Loosen cable freeplay adjustment locknuts and
thread adjusting screw so no threads are
exposed.
b.
Install opening side throttle cable barrel fitting and
throttle cable in throttle spool and middle cable
guide tower. Opening side cable housing is
smaller in diameter than the closing side cable.
