against the backplate while putting on the
teardrop cover. Flat side of pleated filter
element goes against the backplate.

H. Final Installation and Checks
1. Throttle Cable Adjustment
a. Turn threaded throttle cable adjusters to remove
excessive freeplay.
b. Test throttle to ensure that it opens and closes
freely. Turn handlebars to extreme left and
open and close throttle, then turn bars to
extreme right and open and close throttle. If
throttle binds, loosen cable adjusters to put
more freeplay in cables. Tighten adjusting screw
locknuts after making final adjustments.
NOTE - Throttle must not bind and must snap shut to fully
closed position when released.
If throttle does not return to fully closed position when
released, it may result in personal injury and/or property
damage.
2. Install Fuel Tank and Fuel Lines
a. Install the fuel tank. Refer to appropriate
Harley-Davidson
®
service manual.
b. Apply a thin coat of Vaseline or clean engine oil
to the external O-rings of the screw-in style fuel
lines. Replace the O-rings with the new ones
provided, if not already done.
c. Connect the fuel lines to the fuel tank fittings.
The shorter line, which is the return line,
connects to the fitting towards the rear of the
vehicle. The longer line, which is the supply
line, connects to the fitting towards the front of
the vehicle.
3. Final Checks
a. Check manifold to head screws.
b. Check throttle body to manifolds screws.
c. Check support bracket to runner screws, where
applicable.
d. Check support bracket to head breather fitting
screws, where applicable.
e. Check runner to throttle body screws.
f. Check backplate bracket to backplate screws,
where applicable.
g. Check backplate bracket to head breather fitting
screw, where applicable.
e. Check fuel line connections and routings.
f. Check vent hose connections.
g. Test throttle to be sure it opens and closes
freely. Turn handlebars to extreme left and
open and close throttle, then turn bars to
extreme right and open and close throttle.
When released, throttle should snap closed in
all positions.
h. Connect battery and reassemble components
that were removed or disassembled for VFI
Induction System installation. Consult an
authorized Harley-Davidson
®
service manual for
installation procedures for stock parts not
covered in S&S
®
VFI Induction System
installation instructions.
i. Cycle the ignition on and off several times to
pressurize the fuel system and check for
leaks. Repair any leaks before attempting to
start the engine.
Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive.
A gasoline leak may result in personal injury and/or
property damage.
j. Ensure that an appropriate calibration map is
installed in the S&S Cycle VFI Module. Refer to
the VFI Module instructions.
NOTE: If a map for your specific engine is not on the CD
included with the VFI module, check the S&S Cycle website,
www.sscycle.com, for the latest maps. If a map for your
engine combination is not available, S&S Cycle recommends
having a map developed by an experienced tuner using a
steady-state capable dynamometer and an exhaust gas
analyzer or air fuel ratio meter.
Engine damage can occur as a result of improper
tuning, especially if an engine is run in a "lean"
condition for an excessive amount of time.
