Chapter 3: Operaon
Starng the Inspector EXP
Before starng the Inspector EXP, ensure that the external probe is connected both to the unit and the probe
end. Install a standard 9-volt alkaline baery in the baery compartment located in the lower rear (Figure
4). Note: Place the baery against the boom wall, and make sure the wires are placed along the side of the
baery and not under it.
To start the Inspector EXP, set the mode switch to the mode you want, and set the boom switch to On or
Audio. The Inspector EXP then begins a 6-second system check. All indicators and numbers are displayed. Aer
the system check, the radiaon level is displayed in the selected mode. Approximately 30 seconds aer you
start the Inspector EXP, a short beep indicates that enough informaon has been collected to ensure stascal
validity.
Units of Measurement
The Inspector EXP is designed for use of convenonal units; milliroentgens per hour (mR/hr) and counts per
minute (CPM) or SI units microsieverts per hour (µSv/hr) and counts per second (CPS). To switch between
convenonal or SI units choose UNITS in the Ulity Menu. For details, see Ulity Menu in Chapter 3.
Display Update
In the dose, rate, and count modes, the numeric display is updated every 3 seconds. In Timer mode, the
numeric display is updated every second.
Maximum level
When the maximum level for the current mode is reached, the Inspector EXP beeps for 3 seconds, pauses for
3 seconds, and repeats that paern. Also, the RANGE:Full icon is displayed and the numerical values displayed
will show OVER instead of the specic rate. The beeping paern and the ashing display connue unl the
level decreases or the Inspector EXP is turned o.
Response Time (Autoaveraging)
When the radiaon level is less than 6,000 CPM, the reading in any of the dose rate modes is based on the
radiaon detected in the previous 30 seconds. In order to give a quicker response to changes, when the
radiaon level exceeds 6,000 CPM in any 30 second period, the reading is based on the previous 6 seconds.
When the radiaon level exceeds 12,000 CPM in any 30-second period, the reading is based on the previous 3
seconds. Note: You can choose the 3 second response at any radiaon level by using the Ulity Menu detailed
in Chapter 3. Refer to the following table.
Aer 30 second start-up The reading will be based
if instrument is detecng on an average of the previous

<6000 CPM or <1.75 mR/hr
(100 -200 CPS) 6 seconds
