Section 2 Hazards Identification
Overview: Gray powder that can be irritating to the nose, throat and respiratory tract. If overexposed,
immediately leave the work area to a zone of fresh air. Avoid additional overexposure. If symptoms
persist, seek medical attention.
Entry Pathways and potential health effects:
Eyes: Direct contact may cause severe irritation (mechanical and/or abrasion) and possibly
chemical burns. Can cause temporary injury to eyes.
Inhalation: Product may cause irritation to the throat, nose and/or respiratory tract.
Skin Contact: Direct contact may cause severe irritation (dryness, redness, cracking and/or chemical
burns). May produce cement dermatitis due to alkaline, hydroscopic and abrasive
properties.
Ingestion: May cause irritation to the mouth, throat and stomach. May cause dizziness,
gastrointestinal irritation, nausea and/or vomiting.
Aggravated Medical Conditions: Pre‐existing conditions with eye, skin or respiratory disorders may be
aggravated by using this product.
Other Health Effects: Excessive inhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust may cause progressive,
disabling and sometimes fatal lung disease called silicosis. Symptoms include cough, shortness of breath,
wheezing and reduced pulmonary function. Inhalation of crystalline silica (quartz) can cause cancer
based on animal data, and IARC concludes sufficient evidence in humans (Group 1). Refer to IARC
Monograph 68, Silica and some Silicates and Organic Fibers (published June 1997) in conjunction with
the use of these materials. The National Toxicology Program classifies respirable crystalline silica as
