.DESCRIPTION AND USES .
Rust-Oleum
®
 Painter’s Touch
®
 Primers provide a sound
base for application of Painter’s Touch
®
 enamels on
heavily rusted steel. Use of primers promotes topcoat
adhesion and helps prevent chipping, cracking and
peeling. Use of Painter’s Touch primers eliminates the
need for multiple coats of enamel finish. Aerosol primers
should not be used on galvanized steel.

 PRODUCT APPLICATION .
PAINTING CONDITIONS
Use outdoors or in a well ventilated area such as an open
garage. Apply when temperature is between 50-90°F (10-
32°C) and humidity is below 65% to ensure proper drying.
Do not apply to surfaces, when heated, exceed 200°F
(93°C). Do not apply aerosol primers to galvanized steel.
Avoid spraying in very windy and dusty conditions. Cover
surrounding area to protect from spray mist.
SURFACE PREPARATION
ALL SURFACES: Remove all dirt, grease, oil, salt and
chemical contaminants by washing the surface with a
commercial detergent or other suitable cleaning method.
Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and allow to fully dry. All
surfaces must be dry at time of application.
STEEL: Scrape and wire brush or power tool clean to
remove loose rust, scale and deteriorated previous
coatings. Use 1967 Flat Red or 1980 Flat Gray Primer for
sound rusted or clean metal before application of a finish
coat. 1981 Flat White Primer is best for clean metal but
may be used on sound rusted metal as well.
PREVIOUSLY COATED: Previously coated surfaces must
be sound and in good condition. Smooth, hard, or glossy
finishes should be scarified by sanding to create a surface
profile. The Painter’s Touch
®
 Primers are compatible with
most coatings, but a test patch is suggested.
.PRODUCT APPLICATION (cont.) .
WARNING! If you scrape, sand or remove old paint from
any surface, you may release lead paint dust. LEAD IS
TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE
SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE;
ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN
SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH
approved respirator to control lead exposure. Clean up
carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Before you
start, find out how to protect yourself and your family by
contacting the National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-
424-LEAD or log on to www.epa.gov/lead.
APPLICATION
Aerosols: Shake can vigorously for one minute after the
mixing ball begins to rattle. If mixing ball fails to rattle DO
NOT STRIKE CAN. Contact Rust-Oleum. Shake often
during use. Hold can upright 10-16" from surface and
spray in a steady back-and-forth motion, slightly
overlapping each stroke. Keep the can the same distance
from the surface. Keep the can in motion while spraying.
Apply two or more light coats a few minutes apart to avoid
drips and runs. Do not use near open flame.
Brush: Before using, stir thoroughly to ensure any settled
pigment is re-dispersed. Thinning is not required. In hot,
dry conditions, thin up to 2 ounces water per quart to
extend dry time. Avoid painting in direct sunlight or on hot
surfaces. Use a good quality synthetic brush. Avoid
excessive brushing as this will reduce film thickness and
protection. Use light even strokes to ensure smooth and
uniform flow.
DRY & RECOAT TIMES
Dry and recoat times are based on 70°F (21°C) and 50%
relative humidity. Allow more time at cooler temperatures.
Aerosols: Dries to the touch in 20 minutes and handle in
1 hour. May recoat within 1 hour or after 24 hours. Brush:
Dries to touch in 30-60 minutes and handle in 1-2 hours.
May recoat in 2-4 hours.
CLEAN-UP
Aerosols: Wipe off tip before storing. Clean-up wet paint
with xylene or mineral spirits. Properly discard empty
container. Do not burn or place aerosols in home trash
compactor.
Brush: Clean brush and other application tools with soap
and water.
CLOGGING
If the valve clogs, twist and pull off spray tip and rinse in a
solvent such as mineral spirits. Do not insert any object into can
valve opening.
