Introduction
The Coming of a New Age
At the mention of the ‘Tablet PC’, one cannot help but form images of Apple’s
iPad and its awless touch screen features in their minds. The success of
this fancy computing object, released in April 2010, was made possible by a
combination of technological innovations and marketing expertise. With sales
totaling 15 million in 2010, the iPad is symbolic of the coming of a new age.
Indeed, over 80 new tablets were announced to compete with the iPad in early
2011 – the year of the tablet PC.
For the few that have yet to catch up with technological advancements, a tablet
PC is a medium-sized computer in a slate enclosure without a keyboard or
a mouse. It features a touch screen display that utilizes a stylus, digital pen,
or ngertip as the primary input method. This concept of mobile computing is
nothing new. Microsoft® and others developed their version of the tablet PC in
the 90s, but were often criticized to be underpowered, bulky, and plagued by
inefcient use of stylus or digital pen.
Along with the stable growth of tablet PCs in the consumer market, R&D
breakthroughs have continuously resolved problems encountered by past
designs and ensured the usability of such devices. Nowadays, a low power
consumption fan-less CPU provides better system reliability; the availability of
lightweight embedded OS greatly enhances computing power; the development
of sophisticated touch-screen technology offers a more intuitive way of working
with computers; and the penetration and integration of wireless technology
makes communication effortless. In addition, due to its mobility, ease of use,
and wide applications, the tablet PC is becoming and will be the most natural
adoption for the enterprise sectors.
For example, in the healthcare industry, getting the right information at the right
time can often mean the difference between life and death. It is imperative for
clinicians to receive the most up-to-the-minute information throughout all stages
of the care delivery process. The mobility of the tablet PC not only improves the
accuracy of patient data entry, it also offers quick access to complete patient
data and reference materials at point-of-care. The result is safer, more efcient
and higher quality patient care.
In the construction industry where workers are accustomed to computing while
standing or walking, a full function tablet PC combined with rugged durability
greatly increases productivity and reduces risks. It allows for real time data
capture and verication of inspections, punch lists, and schedule updates while
keeping projects on time and within budget. Engineers can access and mark-up
plans and drawings from anywhere in the eld, enabling faster decision-making
and up-to-date information gathering. Job site safety is constantly monitored,
minimizing litigation risks.
For sales representatives expected to work from anywhere, a tablet PC offers
more than just a way to create and deliver engaging presentations. It allows
the user to maintain and access accurate customer information on the road,
complete contracts, upload orders remotely, and track asset transfers instantly.
By using a tablet PC to automate forms and le sales reports, salespeople no
longer need to re-key data back in the ofce.
IEIMobile believes the tablet PC will inspire
unfathomable innovations and we are here to
provide a platform where industries can explore
unlimited opportunities.
