Introduction
Seamless Wireless Network Roaming
We all appreciate the freedom and mobility afforded by the cell phone, as well as the
economy and security of using the company's WLAN to download data or talk via a VoIP-
based telephone system at the ofce. Since the advent of mobile devices that support
multiple connectivity options, "seamless wireless network roaming" is now poised to
become a reality with a single mobile device that can provide wide area connections via
GPRS or CDMA, WLAN connections via 802.11b, plus connectivity to Bluetooth and wired
Ethernet. In addition, a user's mobile device can switch from a cellular carrier's wireless
network to a company's WLAN automatically at the right time, every time without dropped
calls.
Just consider these working scenarios:
Data roaming makes it possible for a delivery and logistics company to move from the
warehouse (WLAN) to the delivery route (WWAN) without any intervention or interruption.
It is common practice for router drivers to check out their loads before leaving the facility
since they are liable for losses and damages to the products on their vehicles.
Making the latest updates for a specic product or procedure available for repair workers
has never been easier with data roaming. Using a single device that functions as both a
phone and a data storage center, service personnel can obtain updates through WWAN
and/or WLAN connections (depending upon the urgency) regarding product sales
information and repair manuals. As updates are accessed on an "as-needed" basis,
unnecessary documentation will no longer take up valuable storage space.
Data roaming enables delivery drivers to log real-time job progress via WWAN connections
back to headquarters. They also have the choice to upload more detailed information (in
larger les) near public hot spot locations such as hotels, fast food restaurants or coffee
shops. The device can detect the availability of a faster connection and automatically
switch to WLAN, without any operator intervention.
Most of IEIMobile products are equipped with both Wireless LAN and GPRS/WCDMA
modules. This combined with powerful embedded operating system support, provides a
seamless wireless communication experience.
Industrial Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi has become a popular choice for connecting industrial devices. It is a well-established, mature technology that offers close integration with existing
Ethernet networks. However, the issues that face an industrial mobile application are quite different from the issues encountered in a typical ofce or commercial
application.
Power saving
By adopting a mobile Wi-Fi solution and modifying the Wi-Fi
driver, IEIMobile products support power saving mode. This
saves battery power while the mobile device is in suspend
mode and Wi-Fi communication is in idle mode.
Auto-connecting to existing wireless LAN
Whenever an IEIMobile device boots up, it automatically
connects to the best signaling access point which has been pre-
congured and registered in a list of Wi-Fi connection points.
Roaming
When moving from one access point zone to anotherin a wireless LAN consisting of typical commercial access points, the IEIMobile optimized Wi-Fi solution ensures
re-connection to new access point in 20 seconds the once original access point has disconnected. This 20-second re-connection time is compliant with Microsoft®
and Wi-Fi roaming certications. IEIMobile's optimized Wi-Fi driver ensures that data transmission will be resumed after re-connection.
Seamless roaming and auto-switching
While roaming in an enterprise wireless LAN or a wireless LAN server like
Cisco, IEIMobile devices are compliant with wireless network servers. This
allows our devices to automatically switch to the AP with the strongest
signal without data loss or interruption--a completely seamless transition.
