RS-232
An EIA standard that specifies
electrical, mechanical, and functional
characteristics for serial binary
communications circuits in a
point-to-point link (two devices
only).
RS-422
An EIA standard that specifies
electrical characteristics of
balanced-voltage digital interface
circuits in a point-to-point link (two
devices only).
RS-485
An EIA standard that specifies
electrical characteristics of
balanced-voltage digital interface
circuits in a multi-point link.

self-test
A description of hardware and
firmware that monitors or tests its
own operation and indicates any
faults it can detect.
