Installing Your
Programmable Controller
Chapter 4
4-2
A well-planned layout is essential for the installation of your processor.
You should consider the following factors:
location
environment
mechanical protection
conductor categories
raceway layout
power distribution
surge suppression
Location
Determining the proper location should be your primary concern.
We specify:
This Characteristic: Should Meet this Specification:
Operating temperature 0 to 60
o
C (32 to 140
o
F)
Storage temperature 40 to 85
o
C (40 to 185
o
F)
Relative humidity 5 to 95% (without condensation)
Environment
Separate the processor system from other equipment and plant walls to
allow for convection cooling. Convection cooling draws a vertical column
of air upward over the processor. Cooling air must not
exceed 60
o
C
(140
o
F) at any point immediately below the processor. If the air
temperature does exceed 60
o
C, install:
fans inside the enclosure to bring in filtered air or recirculate internal
air, or
air conditioning/heat exchangers
Follow these guidelines when installing your processor system:
Allow six vertical inches above and below all processor components,
including other processors.
Allow four horizontal inches on the sides of each processor component.
When you use more than one processor in the same area, allow six
horizontal inches between each processor.
Allow two inches (vertical and horizontal) between the processor and
the wiring duct or terminal strips.
Mount the I/O chassis horizontally to allow convection cooling.
