Appendix B
Communications Application Note
B–3
1. If you wish to display the data measured by a Powermonitor on your
computer, you have three options:
a. Use the purchased copy of the Powermonitor Software.
b. You can write your own program to up load and display the data
measured by the device.
c. You can purchase the Bulletin 6190PMO ControlView Option
package. It requires a PLC5 and the Bulletin 6200 PLC software
package.
2. If you wish to connect your computer to a single device, then you have
the option of communicating via RS232C or RS–485.
If the computer is located less than 50 feet from the device you wish to
communicate with, then RS232C will be suitable.
If the computer is located more than 50 feet from the device (but less than
4000 feet) then it is best to use RS485 communications. In this case,
you will be required to purchase either:
a. an RS485 communications port for the computer
or
b. an RS232C to RS485 converter device (if the computer is
already equipped with an RS232C port).
3. If you wish to connect your computer to more than one device, then only
RS485 will permit this.
!
ATTENTION: Powermonitors that communicate via the
RS232C standard should never be connected to devices that
communicate via RS485. If this is attempted, damage to the
RS485 devices will occur
