INTRODUCTION
TheRiotFamilyofUltrasonicLevelSensors,(ProductFamily100‐00)wasdesignedtoprovideaccurate
and cost‐effective remote monitoring of levels in various tanks, storage bins, and silos. There are
severalproductofferingswithinthefamily,butmostoperatesimilarlyfromauserperspective.

ThereareseveralelementsthatmakeuptheRiotUS1Sensorfamily:
1. Sensors
a. Different products in the family use different Ultrasonic sensors – with a variety of
attributes:
i. Frequency‐Multiplefrequenciesareusedforvarioussonicqualities.Ingeneral,
lowerfrequencysensors(longerwavelength)areusedforlongerdistances,and
shorter for shorter. Also, shorter frequency sensors have shorter minimum
distanceandtendtobemoreusefulforsmallertanks.Lastly,shorterfrequency
sensors tend to be more power efficient and are more suitable for very long
battery life in field applications. A given device has a fixed frequency due to
optimizationoftheactualsignalingelement.
ii. Material – our standard sensors use an aluminum housing. This is sonically
efficientandverylowcost.Wealsouseothermaterials(Kynar, etc.) for
applicationswhereexposuretoreactivechemicalsisprevalent.
iii. FrequencyandMaterialcanbespecifiedattimeoforder.
b. SensorProcessing–alldataisprocessedon‐board.Theinternaldevicesincludeanalog
anddigitalfiltering,signalrecognition,andtime‐distancecalculationwithtemperature
errorcorrection.Thedatadeliveredtotheuserisindistance units as defined (i.e.
inchesorcentimeters.)
