6.1 Cleaning the Printhead
If print quality declines (symptoms include non-compliant bar codes, print dropouts, streaks), the typical cause is debris
build-up on the printhead. Fur thermore, when the build-up is not removed it may lead to element failure, gr eatly reducing
the li fe o f the prin thead. To cl ean the prin thead:
1. T u rn ‘Off’ and unplug the p rinter.
2. Open the cover. Unlock the Printhead Latch and
raise the Printhead Assembly. Allow the
printhead to cool before proceeding.
3. Move media and ribbon away from the printhead
as necessa r y.
4. Using a Cot ton S wab moist ened, not soa ked, wit h
isopropyl alcohol gently wipe away any build-up
on the pr inthea d su rfa ce, p aying c lose at tention t o
the Burn Line. Allow the printhea d to dry.
5. Replace the ribbon and media. Lower the
Printhea d Assembly back to the locked position.

6.1.1 Automated Printhead Cleaning (printers with display only)
1. Remove media and ribbon.
2. Place a Da ta max Cleaning Ca rd, par t number 70-2013-01 under the printhead. Lower and lock the printhead. Ensure
t hat the L eveling Cam is not
engaged ( positioned in it s left mos t position).
3. Press and hold the TEST Key f or a pproxima tely four s econds.
The printer will begin the cleaning routine.
4. In cases of heavy build- up, or if high heat values ar e t ypic ally used for print ing, flip the car d over and r ep eat Step 3.
5. Reins tall your r i bbon and media ( if neces sar y, r eadjust the L eveling C am, see Sec tion 6.2) . Lower and lock t he
print head. C lose the cover.
