direct thermal media Media coated with special chemicals that react and darken with the application of heat.
DPI (dots per inch) A measurement of print resolution, rated in the number of thermal elements contained in one
inch of the p rinthead. Also refer red to as “r es olution” .

Flash memory Non-volatile memory (does not require printer power to maintain data) that can be erased and
rep rogr ammed, used t o hold the p rint ers operating programs .
font A set of alphanumer ic characters that share a particular typeface.
gap A s pace between die-cut or notc hed l abel s u sed to sense the to p of fo rm.
IPS (inches per s eco nd) Imperial measurement of pri n ter sp eed s.
label A p aper or s ynthetic printi ng ma terial, typic ally wit h a pressure sensitive adhes ive backing.
label lengt h The dista nce from the top of the la bel to the bottom of the label as it exits the printer.
label repeat T he dis tance from the t op of one label t o the t op of the next label.
label tr ac king Exc es sive lateral (side t o side) movement of the media as it tra vels under the printhead.
label widt h Th e l eft to ri g h t mea su rement o f the l ab el as i t ex i ts the pri nter.
mark Generalized term to indicate the label top of for m light.
media Generalized term for all types of printing stocks, including: roll fed, continuous, die-cut, reflective, and
fanfold.
med ia hub Device in the printer used to support r oll media .
media sensor An electronic device equipped with photosensors to detect media and the top of form on die-cut,
not c hed or reflective media.
