7.2 Hex Dump Mode
The H ex Du mp Mode is a useful tool f or dia gnosing problems, inc l uding communicati on and DPL syntax errors, allowing
a comparison of input strings (sent by host) to output data (received by printer). To decode this information, the Class
Series Programmer’s Manual is a n es sent ia l r efer ence. T his ou tp u t c a n be u sed for debugging t he la b el f or mat . In a ddit ion,
by repeatedly sending a format, this mode can uncover handshaking problems (if they exist). Handshaking problems are
identif i ed b y sections of mis si ng data in the c harac ter str ing.
Non-display printers:
To print the Hex Dump Label:
With the printer on, loaded with media (at least 4 inches wide) and r ibbon (if printing with ther mal transfer media), pr ess
and hold the
FEED
button while tu rning the p rint er on. Continue holding t he
FEED
button until the
STOP
light turns
off . Now, all da ta r eceived by the p rinter will b e ou tput in hex adecimal code, along with the p rintable AS CII equ ivalents , a s
s hown below. To exit H ex Du mp Mode s i mply turn t he p rinter off and then b ack on.
Display printers:
To print the Hex Dump Label:
T o begin, go t o t he Di a gnost ic s menu a nd ena ble Hex Du mp M ode; s ee Sect ion 5 . 1. 7 . E xit t he menu a nd s a ve the cha nges .
Now,HEX DUMP MODE will be indicated by the display and all data sent to the printer will now be output in
hexadecimal c ode, along wit h the printabl e ASCII equ ivalents, a s shown below.
The figure below is a sample Hex Dump Label. After sending a label format to the printer, the hex code output will be
immediate. As a final note, many software programs use bit mapping to construct the label, making diagnosis difficult.
