RETROTREAD™TipsandTricks

1. Ifyourexistingtreadsaresqueaking,securethemwithadditionalwoodscrewsbeforeinstalling
yournew
RETROTREAD™.Additionalscrewscanbeaddedtoattachtheexistingtreadstothe
staircasestringer.Thiswillalsopreventsqueaksfromoccurringinthefuture.Donotuse
sheetrockscrews.
2. Wheninstallingnewrisers,youmaychoosetoreturntheexposedendsoftheriseronopen
staircases.
Thiscanbedonebycuttinga45°miteredreturnacros sthebackoftheriseronthe
opensidemakingthefaceoftheriserlongerthantheback.Cutthereturnfromapieceofriser
thatyoucanholdsafelytomakethecut.Gluethereturnin
placeusingwoodglue.Otherwise,
youwillneedtosandandfilltheendgrainofthenewriserbeforefinishing.
3. Youcanalsocutamiteredreturnonthebackendofthereversiblenosingtoachieveamore
finishedlookifdesired.
4. Checkthecornersof
yourrisersandtreadsforsquareandplumb.Typically,youwillnotfind
thatthecornersareatrue90°.Asimpleanglefindercanbeveryusefulinfindingexactangles
inyourstaircase.Youcanthenadjustyourmitersawaccordinglyandcuteachtreadandriser
specifically
foritslocationinthestaircase.
5. Besuretodryfitallyourpartsbeforepermanentlyinstallingthem.Thiswillallowyoutomake
adjustmentsasneededwithouttearingapartyourwork.
6. Moststairtreads,whetherstainorcarpetgradeareroughlyoneinchthick.The
RETROTREAD™
isdesignedtoconcealimperfectionsandexistingtreadswithits1‐¼”covemoulding.Ifyou
encounteracarpetgradetreadcutoutofdimensionallumbersuchasa2X10,theuseofa
scrollbracketmayberequiredtocompletelyconcealtheendoftheexistingtread
onopen
staircases.Scrollbracketsmustbeinstalledafterthenewriserandbeforethe
RETROTREAD™.
7. Ifcaulkorputtyisneededtofillgapsleftbetweentheendsoftheriserandthewall,applyyour
choiceoffillerbeforeyouinstallthe
RETROTREAD™.
8. Considerfinishingyour
RETROTREAD™aftercuttingtosizebutbeforeinstalling.
9. Measuretwice,cutonce.

