Hardware upgrades to improve database, SharePoint, Exchange, and
file server performance with the Intel processor-powered Dell
PowerEdge T630
2. Create the appropriate access specifications. For each access specification:
a. Create the access specification to match the configuration in Figure 5.
b. Under Topology, select the computer name, and click the Start a New Disk Worker on Selected Manager
button until you have one worker assigned to the target volume.
c. Under Disk Targets, set the # of Outstanding I/Os to the appropriate number.
d. Set the Maximum disk size to 100GB, using sectors as the unit of measurement. Sectors can be obtained
by dividing 100GB in bytes by 512.
e. Under Results Display, make sure that Iometer has selected Start of Test.
f. Under Test Setup, set the Run Time to 45 minutes and the Ramp Up Time to 60 seconds.
g. Save the configuration.
3. Exit Iometer.
Running the test
To run the test, we staggered the workload, allowing each benchmark time to warm up prior to measuring the
performance and latency on each of the solutions.
1. Begin running the LoadGen benchmark. LoadGen is set to run for 1 hour, with a 15-minute allotted warm-up
period and 45-minute test run time (recorded latency period).
2. Immediately after beginning the LoadGen benchmark, start the WSSDW workload. This workload is set to run for
1 hour, with a 15-minute warm up period and a 45-minute run period.
3. Five minutes after LoadGen and WSSDW begin, start the DVD Store benchmark. DVD Store is set to warm up for
10 minutes, and then run for 45 minutes of recorded performance to coincide with LoadGen.
4. After 10 minutes, begin the Iometer file server workload and run it for 45 minutes.
