Harddisksecurity
Toprotectpasswordsfromunauthorizedsecurityattacks,severalofthelatesttechnologiesandalgorithms
areintegratedintoUEFIBIOSandhardwaredesignofThinkPadnotebookcomputers.
Tomaximizesecurity,dothefollowing:
1.Setapower-onpasswordaswellasaharddiskpasswordforyourinternalharddiskdrive.Referto
theproceduresin“Power-onpassword”onpage50and“Harddiskpasswords”onpage50.For
security,alongerpasswordisrecommended.
2.IfaDiskEncryptionharddiskdriveisinstalledinyourcomputer,besuretoprotectthecontentsofyour
computermemoryfromunauthorizedaccessbyuseofdriveencryptionsoftware.
3.Beforeyoudisposeof,sell,orhandoveryourcomputer,besuretodeletedatastoredonit.Referto

DiskEncryptionharddiskdrive
SomemodelscontaintheDiskEncryptionharddiskdrive.Thisfeaturehelpstoprotectyourcomputer
againstsecurityattacksonmedia,NANDashordevicecontrollersbyuseofahardwareencryptionchip.For
theefcientuseoftheencryptionfeature,besuretosetaharddiskpasswordfortheinternalstoragedevice.
Noticeondeletingdatafromyourharddiskdrive
Ascomputersspreadintoeverycorneroflife,theyprocessmoreandmoreinformation.Thedataonyour
computer,someofwhichmightbesensitive,isstoredonaharddiskdrive.Beforeyoudisposeof,sell,or
handoveryourcomputer,besuretodeletedatastoredonit.
Handingyourcomputerovertosomeoneelsewithoutdeletingtheloadedsoftware,suchasoperating
systemsandprogramsoftware,mightevenviolatelicenseagreements.Youareadvisedtocheckthe
termsandconditionsofthoselicenseagreements.
Therearemethodsthatseemtodeletethedata:
•Movethedatatotherecyclebin,andthenclickEmptyrecyclebin.
•UsetheDeleteoption.
•Formatyourharddiskdrive,usingthesoftwareforinitializingit.
•Usingtherecoveryprogramtobringtheharddiskdrivebacktothefactorydefaultsettings.
Theseoperations,however,onlychangetheleallocationofthedata;theydonotdeletethedataitself.In
otherwords,thedataretrievalprocessingisdisabledunderanoperatingsystemsuchasWindows.The
dataisstillthere,eventhoughitseemstobelost.Thus,itissometimespossibletoreadthedatabyuseof
