•Problem:ThecomputerdisplayremainsblankafteryoupressFntoreturnfromsleepmode.
Solution:Checkwhetheranexternalmonitorwasdisconnectedorturnedoffwhilethecomputerwas
insleepmode.Ifyoudisconnectedorturnedofftheexternalmonitor,connectitorturnitonbefore
resumingthecomputerfromthesleepmode.Whenresumingthecomputerfromthesleepmode
withoutattachingtheexternalmonitororturningiton,andthecomputerdisplayremainsblank,press
F6tobringupthecomputerdisplay.
•Problem:Thecomputerdoesnotreturnfromsleepmode,orthesystemstatusindicator(illuminated
ThinkPadlogo)blinksslowlyandthecomputerdoesnotwork.
Solution:Ifthesystemdoesnotreturnfromsleepmode,itmighthaveenteredsleeporhibernation
modeautomaticallybecausethebatteryisdepleted.Checkthesystemstatusindicator(illuminated
ThinkPadlogo).
–Ifthesystemstatusindicator(illuminatedThinkPadlogo)blinksslowly,yourcomputerisinsleepmode.
Connecttheacpoweradaptertothecomputer;thenpressFn.
–Ifthesystemstatusindicator(illuminatedThinkPadlogo)isoff,yourcomputerisinpower-offstateor
inhibernationmode.Connecttheacpoweradaptertothecomputer;thenpressthepowerbutton
toresumeoperation.
Ifthesystemstilldoesnotreturnfromsleepmode,yoursystemmightstoprespondingandyoumightnot
beabletoturnoffthecomputer.Inthiscase,youneedtoresetthecomputer.Ifyouhavenotsavedyour
data,itmightbelost.Toresetthecomputer,pressandholdthepowerbuttonfor4secondsormore.If
thesystemisstillnotreset,removetheacpoweradapterandthebattery.
•Problem:Yourcomputerdoesnotentersleeporhibernationmode.
Solution:Checkwhetheranyoptionhasbeenselectedtodisableyourcomputerfromenteringsleep
orhibernationmode.
Ifyourcomputertriestoentersleepmodebuttherequestisrejected,thedeviceattachedtotheUSB
connectormighthavebeendisabled.Ifthisoccurs,doahot-unplug-and-plugoperationfortheUSB
device.
•Problem:Thebatterydischargesslightlywhilethecomputerisinhibernationmode.
Solution:Ifthewakeupfunctionisenabled,thecomputerconsumesasmallamountofpower.Thisisnot

Problemswithdrivesandotherstoragedevices
Thissectionincludesharddiskdriveproblemsandopticaldriveproblems.
Harddiskdriveproblems
•Problem:Theharddiskdrivemakesarattlingnoiseintermittently.
Solution:Therattlingnoisemightbeheard:
–Whentheharddiskdrivebeginsornishesgettingaccesstodata.
–Whenyoucarrytheharddiskdrive.
–Whenyoucarryyourcomputer.
Thisisanormalcharacteristicofaharddiskdriveandisnotadefect.
•Problem:Theharddiskdrivedoesnotwork.
Solution:OntheBootmenuofThinkPadSetup,makesurethattheharddiskdriveisontheBootpriority
orderlist.IfitisontheExcludedfrombootorderlist,itisdisabled.Selecttheentryforitonthelistand
presstheShift+1key.ThismovestheentrytotheBootpriorityorderlist.
