Whileitisimportanttoprotectles,data,andsettingsthatareontheharddiskdrive,youalsomight
needtoinstallanewoperatingsystem,installnewdevicedrivers,updateyoursystemUEFIBIOS,or
recoverpreinstalledsoftware.Thisinformationwillhelpyouhandleyourcomputerwithpropercareand
keepitintopworkingshape.

Installinganewoperatingsystem
Ifyouinstallanewoperatingsystemonyourcomputer,youneedtoinstallthesupplementlesand
ThinkPaddevicedriversforitatthesametime.
•IfyouinstallanewWindows7operatingsystem,thenecessarylesarelocatedinthefollowing
directoriesonyourharddiskdrive:
–ThesupplementlesfortheoperatingsystemsupportedareintheC:\SWTOOLS\OSFIXESdirectory.
–ThedevicedriversfortheoperatingsystemsupportedareintheC:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERSdirectory.
–ThepreloadedsoftwareprogramsareintheC:\SWTOOLS\APPSdirectory.
Note:Ifyoucannotndthesupplementles,thedevicedrivers,andprogramsoftwareyouneedonyour
harddiskdrive,orifyouwanttoreceiveupdatesandthelatestinformationaboutthem,goto:

Note:Theprocessofinstallinganewoperatingsystemdeletesallthedataonyourharddiskdrive,including

Beforeyoubegin
Beforeyouinstalltheoperatingsystem,dothefollowing:
•IfyouaregoingtoinstallanewWindows7operatingsystem,copyallthesubdirectoriesandlesinthe
C:\SWTOOLSdirectorytoaremovablestoragedevice,toavoidlosinglesduringtheinstallation.
•Printtheinstructionsyouwilluse.Gotothesectionfortheoperatingsystemyouareusing:
–InstallingtheWindows7operatingsystem
–InstallingtheWindows8operatingsystem
Notes:
–TheUEFIBIOSfeaturesaresupportedontheWindows7operatingsystem(64-bit)andtheWindows
8operatingsystem(64-bit).
–BesuretosetapreferredsettingfortheUEFI/LegacyBootoptioninThinkPadSetup.
–Afterinstallingthenewoperationsystem,youshouldnotchangetheinitialUEFI/LegacyBootsetting
inThinkPadSetup.TheUEFI/LegacyBootsettingmustbethesameasitwaswhentheWindows
operatingsystemimagewasinstalled.Otherwise,thenewoperatingsystemwillnotbootproperly.
