Chapter 1: Getting Started Things to Consider Before You Connect Protect Against Power Surges • • • Connect all components before you plug any of their power cords into the wall outlet. Turn off the TV and/or component before you connect or disconnect any cables. Make sure all antennas and cables are properly grounded. Refer to the Important Safeguards sheet packed with your TV. Protect Components from Overheating • • • • Don’t block ventilation holes on any of the components.
Chapter 1: Getting Started ANTENNA, CABLE, CABLE BOX OR VCR Setup and Connections Step 1: Connect your TV Connect the cable from your cable system or off-air antenna to the cable in-jack on the back of the TV, as shown on the left. ANTENNA TV (Back Panel) Step 2: Plug in the TV Plug the end of the power cord into the wall outlet. Match the wide blade of the plug with the wide slot in the outlet. Insert the plug completely into the outlet. Step 3: Put Batteries in the Remote 1.
Chapter 1: Getting Started Step 5: Auto Channel Search Perform an Auto Channel Search (described in the Channel menu section). Step 6 (optional): Connect other components to your TV Use the jacks on the front panel of your TV to connect components to your TV. You can see what’s playing on the component you connected by pressing the INPUT button on your remote until VID appears on the screen. VIDEO AUDIO VIDEO (in) Allows you to connect a component such as a VCR, camcorder or Internet access device.
Chapter 1: Getting Started The Buttons on the Remote Control POWER DISPLAY VOL To enter a two-digit channel, press the two digits. To enter a three-digit channel, press and hold the first digit for two seconds until two dashes appear to the right of the number, then add the second two. Example: to tune to channel 123, press and hold 1 for two seconds, press 2, then press 3. RESET CHAN (up and down) buttons Scan up or down through the current channel list.

PREV CH MUTE CHAN VOL VOL CHAN MENU CLEAR RESET 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 RESET Returns all picture settings back to their factory defaults. SKIP (Commercial Skip) Press once before changing channels. The TV will wait 30 seconds before returning you to the original channel. Press again to add more time.
Chapter 2: Using the TV’s Features 12:01 SLEEP 60 CC Channel Marker There are several indicators that might appear when you press the DISPLAY button on the remote. This display is called the Channel Marker. The following list describes the items on the Channel Marker screen (left to right and top to bottom). 12:01 Displays the current time. 60 Displays the current channel or input channel (VID). The first three choices in the Parental Controls menu involve software inside your TV (referred to as V-Chip) which allows you to block TV programs and movies based on violence, sex, or other content you may believe children should not view.

How to block movie ratings and view movie ratings is explained in the next two sections. To access the MOVIE RATING LIMIT menu: 1. 2. 3. Press MENU on the remote control (the TV MAIN MENU appears). Select Parental Controls (press 4).

Highlight the Rating field and press the CHAN up and down buttons to find the rating you want to view. Press VOL+ to highlight the rating Status field. Press the CHAN up and down buttons to change the button from Block to View.

The TV age-based ratings and content themes you can block are listed on the next page. Rating Status Field Lets you select whether the status of the age-based rating limit to the left is V iew or Block. TV Rating Limit Lets you select fr om a list of age-based ratings you can block or view.
Chapter 2: Using the TV’s Features Age-Based Rating 12 Description and Content Themes for Age-Based Ratings TV-MA Mature Audience Only. Specifically designed to be viewed by adults and may be unsuitable for children under 17. It contains one or more of the following content themes: crude indecent language (L), explicit sexual activity (S), or graphic violence (V). TV-14 Parents Strongly Cautioned. Contains some material that many parents would find unsuitable for children under 14.

Notes: Broadcasters are not required to provide content themes or age-based ratings.
Chapter 2: Using the TV’s Features V-Chip Unrated Program Block Selecting this option lets you decide if programs that the V-Chip recognizes as “unrated” can be viewed. Note that “unrated” TV programs may include news, sports, political, religious, local and weather programs, emergency bulletins, public announcements, and programs without ratings. View All unrated programs are available. Block All unrated programs are not available.

The following pages explain how to use the different types of menus to adjust the features of your TV. Chapter 3: Using the TV’s Menu System Picture Quality Menu – 1 Contrast – 2 Color – 3 Tint – 4 Black Level – 5 Sharpness 6 Reset Picture Controls 0 Exit Picture Quality Menu + + + + This menu contains five controls that adjust the TV’s picture. Use the CHAN or VOL buttons to adjust the controls. Contrast Adjusts the difference between the light and dark areas of the picture. + Color Adjusts the richness of the color. Tint Adjusts the balance between the red and green levels.
Chapter 3: Using the TV’s Menu System Using Closed Captioning Many programs are encoded with closed-captioning information, which lets you display the audio portion of a program as text on the TV screen. Closed captioning is not available on all channels at all times. Only specific programs encoded with closed-captioning information are applicable. When a program is closed captioned, the CC icon is displayed in the channel marker. See Chapter 2 for more information about the channel marker.

Antenna Choose this if you are currently using an off-air antenna for UHF/VHF TV signals. Cable TV Choose this if you are currently using cable or a cable box for TV signals.
Chapter 4: Other Information Troubleshooting Most problems you encounter with your TV you can correct by consulting the Troubleshooting list that follows. TV Problems TV won’t turn on • • • • • Press the POWER button. Make sure the TV is plugged in. Check the wall receptacle (or extension cord) to make sure it is “live” by plugging in something else. Something might be wrong with your remote control. Press the POWER button on the front of the TV.
Chapter 4: Other Information Troubleshooting Can’t select certain channel • • Channel may be airing a program that exceeds a TV Rating limit. To deactivate Parental Controls temporarily, press DISPLAY on your remote and enter your password. If using a VCR, make sure the TV/VCR button on the VCR is in the correct mode (press the TV/VCR button on your VCR). No picture, no sound but TV is on • • The channel might be empty — change channels.
Chapter 4: Other Information Troubleshooting Problems with V-Chip/Parental Controls The rating limits don’t work • You must lock the settings. Go to the TV MAIN MENU (press MENU on your remote), select Parental Controls (press 4 on your remote). Then select Parental Controls again (press 4 on your remote).
Chapter 4: Other Information Care and Cleaning CAUTION: Turn OFF your TV before cleaning. You can clean the TV as required, using a soft lint-free cloth. Be sure to occasionally dust the ventilation slots in the cabinet to help assure adequate ventilation. The TV’s screen may be cleaned with a soft, lint-free cloth as well. Take care not to scratch or mar the screen. If necessary, you may use a cloth dampened with warm water.
Chapter 4: Other Information Limited Warranty What your warranty covers: • Defects in materials or workmanship. For how long after your purchase: • 90 days from date of purchase for labor charges. • One year from date of purchase for parts. • Two years from date of purchase for the picture tube. The warranty period for rental units begins with the first rental or 45 days from date of shipment to the rental firm, whichever comes first.
Chapter 4: Other Information What your warranty does not cover: • Customer instruction. (Your Owner’s Manual describes how to install, adjust, and operate your television. Any additional information should be obtained from your dealer.) • Installation and related adjustments. • Signal reception problems not caused by your television. • Damage from misuse or neglect. • Batteries. • Customer replacement fuses. • Damage from images burnt onto the screen.
