Finding the The magnetic azimuth is the directional reading in degrees taken directly fi'om the
Magnetic compass. This reading represents the number of degrees offofmagnetic north. For
Azimuth example:
East - 90° Azimuth
West - 270°Azimuth
South - 180° Azimuth
North - 0° or 360° Azimuth
Two types of compasses are commonly used to fred the magnetic azimuth.The
"standard" compasshasafixeddialwitha"needle" that alwayspointstowardmagnetic
north. Anothertype is a "lensatic" compass.Thiscompasshas a stationaryreference
markwithamovingdialandalensthatallowstheusertofocusonthedialwhilepeering
through a directionalsight. Both types can be used to find the magnvticazimuth.
However,the lensaticcompassis more accurate andis the preferred choice.
