Chapter 1: Connections & Setup Things to Consider Before You Connect Protect Against Power Surges • Connect all components before you plug any of their power cords into the wall outlet. • Turn off the TV and/or component before you connect or disconnect any cables. • Make sure all antennas and cables are properly grounded. Important Battery Information • If you’re not going to use the remote for a month or more, be sure to remove the batteries because they can leak and cause damage.
Chapter 1: Connections & Setup How to Use the Remote Control to Complete the Initial Setup The technical term is “Navigation”– how you move through the on-screen menus. The method is the same throughout the menu screens: highlight your choice and select it. To highlight a menu item, press the arrow buttons on the remote to highlight one of the menus on the screen. Use the up and down arrow buttons to move up or down. Use the right and left arrow buttons to move right or left.

You’ll need to set a few important menu items the first time you turn on your TV/DVD. Chapter 1: Connections & Setup EJECT Ejects a disc. ENTER When a menu is on the screen, selects the item that is highlighted. ERASE /ADD Erases or adds the current channel to the channel list. GO BACK In DVD mode returns you to the previous screen. In TV model returns to the previous channel. INFO In DVD mode, displays current disc information while the disc is playing. In TV mode, displays the Input information. INPUT/SETUP In TV mode, toggles through the TV, VID1, VID2, and DVD signals.
Chapter 2: Playing Discs DVD Basics Regional Coding Both the DVD player and the discs are coded by region. These regional codes must match in order for the disc to play. If the codes don’t match, the disc won’t play. This unit’s code is region 1. Discs with other regional codes can’t be played in this unit. Using Different Menus Each disc is programmed with different features. There are two separate menu paths that you can use to access features: the disc’s menu and the DVD’s status banner.
Chapter 2: Playing Discs Loading and Playing Discs Before you load a disc, make sure that it is compatible with the player. Note that the following discs CANNOT be used with this player: • Laserdisc • CD-I, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM • MiniDisc • CD-G discs play audio only, not graphics To Load and Play a Disc 1. Press ON-OFF on the remote or POWER on the top of the TV/DVD. Then make sure the unit is in DVD mode [press the DVD button. 2. Insert the disc into the disc slot on the top of the unit.
Chapter 2: Playing Discs Playback Features Playback operations of DVDs and CDs vary among discs. Since this unit plays DVDs according to the disc contents the software producers designed, some playback features may not be available. Refer to the instructions packed with the DVDs for information. Playback features aren’t usually available during the opening credits of a movie. If a playback feature isn’t available, the invalid symbol appears on the screen when you press a button.
Chapter 2: Playing Discs Using a Disc Menu A disc is capable of having an on-screen menu that is separate from the DVD’s on-screen status banner. The disc menu might only contain a list of the titles and chapters, or it may allow you to change features such as language and playback settings. Although the content and operation of disc menus vary from disc to disc, the following example will give you an idea of what to expect. 1. When the disc is first inserted and/or you press MENU, the disc menu appears.
Chapter 2: Playing Discs Using the INFO Banner While a disc is playing, press the INFO button on the player or the remote to bring up the Information Banner. The Information Banner shows the status of DVD features and allows you to change them while the disc is playing. If nothing is selected after a few seconds, the banner disappears. The options below show you what happens when you press the INFO button. Press INFO 1 time Brings up the Info Banner and shows the current title, chapter, and time.
Chapter 2: Playing Discs Changing the Audio Language AUDIO 2/3:AC-3 5.1 CH ENGLISH Use the AUDIO button on the remote to change the Audio Language setting for the current DVD disc. Press the AUDIO button repeatedly to access different audio options. As you access an option, the audio language and format change at that time. Notes: The audio feature only works if the disc was created with multiple languages. Some discs allow you to change the audio format from the disc’s menu, if available.
Chapter 2: Playing Discs Using the Repeat Feature The default mode for the Repeat feature is OFF. Pressing the REPEAT button on the remote repeatedly changes the repeat options: • CHAPTER • TITLE • ALL • REPEAT OFF As you access the repeat options, the repeat option changes at that time. For example, if you access CHAPTER, the chapter will start playing again from the beginning when you get to the end of the chapter. The selected repeat option loops repeatedly until you turn it off.
Chapter 2: Playing Discs Playing Audio CDs Tip You can also advance to the next chapter or track by pressing , or go to the preceding chapter or track by pressing . When playing an audio CD, the Information Banner appears automatically. It displays the current track and the amount of time for that track playing, the total amount of time on the disc and the current time running on the disc. The options below show you what happens when you press the INFO button.
Chapter 2: Playing Discs Playing mp3 Discs mp3 is an audio file format which compresses recorded music. It was developed by Fraunhofer Gesellschaft in collaboration with Thomson Inc. The main advantage of the mp3 format is that it means CD-quality music tracks can be stored on a personal computer in user-friendly, compressed files. CD-R discs that have been encoded in mp3 format can be played on your DVD player.
Chapter 2: Playing Discs Skipping Songs Use the Next ( ) button on the remote to move to the next song. Use the Previous ( ) button to move to the beginning of the currently playing song. Press the button again to move to the previous song. Changing the Play Mode You can choose what order the songs will play on a disc temporarily. The FOLDER play mode is the default. To access the play mode options, highlight PLAY MODE (at the bottom of the screen). Use the up or down arrow to choose an option.
Chapter 3: DVD Menus Using the Setup Menu The SETUP MENU is the DVD player’s main menu. It contains features and options that let you customize your TV/DVD. You must be in the DVD mode to access this menu. Display The Display menu controls how the picture appears on the screen by adjusting the aspect ratio. The default setting is 16:9 (widescreen). MODE 1. Make sure the TV and remote are in DVD mode by pressing the DVD button. 2.
Chapter 3: DVD Menus 4:3 /LB (Letterbox) – Choose this setting if you want to see movies in their original aspect ratio (height-to-width ratio). You’ll see the entire frame of the movie, but it will take up a smaller portion of the screen vertically. The movie might appear with black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. 4:3/LB (Letterbox) 16:9 (Widescreen) – Choose this setting if your unit is connected to a widescreen TV.
Chapter 3: DVD Menus OSD (On-Screen Display) Language Use this feature to change the language for the player’s on-screen menu system. The default is English. 1. Make sure the remote is in DVD mode by pressing the DVD button. 2. Press INPUT/SETUP (the SETUP MENU appears). 3. Press the down arrow button until OSD LANG is highlighted (the on-screen display languages appear). 4. Press the right arrow button to access the OSD LANG options. 5.
Chapter 3: DVD Menus Explanation of Rating Limits The DVD Rating Limits feature lets you determine what types of discs can be played in the player, and what types of discs will require a password to override the rating limit that you’ve set. In the U.S., the ratings feature is based on the ratings set up by the MPAA (Motion Pictures Association of America) such as R, PG, G, etc.
Chapter 3: DVD Menus Changing Your Password You can change your password, but the player must be locked. 1. If a disc is playing, press STOP. Then make sure the remote is in DVD mode by pressing the DVD button. 2. Press INPUT/SETUP (the DVD player’s SETUP MENU appears). 3. Press the down arrow button until PASSWORD is highlighted, then press the right arrow button to highlight CHANGE. Then press ENTER. If asked, enter your current password. 4.
Chapter 4: TV Features and Menus Closed Caption Menu Many programs are encoded with closed-captioning information, which lets you display the audio portion of a program as text on the TV screen. CAPTION CAPTION 1 1. Make sure the remote is in TV mode by pressing the TV button. CAPTION 2 2. Press MENU (the TV Main menu appears). 3. Highlight CLOSED CAPTION, and press ENTER (the CLOSED CAPTION menu appears). 4.
Chapter 4: TV Features and Menus PICTURE 3. Press the up and down arrow buttons to highlight an item, and then press ENTER to select it. 4. To adjust a setting, press the left and right arrow buttons to increase or decrease it as necessary. COLOR CONTRAST BRIGHTNESS SHARPNESS TINT COLOR Adjusts the richness of the color. RESET CONTRAST Adjusts the difference between the light and dark areas of the picture.
Chapter 4: TV Features and Menus SETUP Menu MAIN MENU CLOSED CAPTION The SETUP menu allows you to choose the signal type (ANTENNA INPUT) attached to your TV, build your TV’s channel list, and edit the channels within the list. PICTURE SOUND Note: Before editing a channel, use the number buttons to enter the channel number that you want to edit before entering the menu system. SETUP To access the SETUP menu: PARENTAL CONTROL 1. Press MENU (the TV Main menu appears). ADD 2.
Chapter 4: TV Features and Menus MAIN MENU Parental Controls and V-Chip CLOSED CAPTION The choices in the PARENTAL CONTROL menu involve software inside your TV which allows you to block TV programs and movies based on violence, sex, or other content you may believe children should not view. PICTURE SOUND Once you block programs, you can unblock programs by entering a password. SETUP By default, the software inside your TV is turned “off.” For instructions to turn on V-Chip, go to page 38.
Chapter 4: TV Features and Menus How V-Chip Works V-Chip reads the program’s age-based rating (TV-MA, TV-14, etc.) and content themes [(Violence (V), Adult Language (L), etc.)]. If you have blocked the rating and/or content themes that the program contains, you will receive a message that it is not available. Broadcasters are not required to provide content themes, so programs received with no content themes will only be blocked if you block their age-based rating.
Chapter 4: TV Features and Menus Activating V-Chip MAIN MENU CLOSED CAPTION Selecting this option lets you activate and deactivate parental control settings. PICTURE 1. Make sure the remote is in TV mode by pressing the TV button. 2. Press MENU (the Main menu appears). 3. Press the down arrow button until the PARENTAL CONTROL is highlighted, then press ENTER. 4. Use the arrow button to highlight V-CHIP, and press ENTER to turn in ON. It must be on for rating limits to take effect.

Chapter 5: Other Information Problems with V-Chip/Parental Controls The rating limits don’t work • You must activate the settings. Press the TV button to make sure the remote is in TV mode. Then press MENU, select PARENTAL CONTROL, enter your password, and highlight and turn on V CHIP. I don’t remember my password and I want to unlock the TV • If you forget your password you can reset it. Press the MENU and SOURCE button on the top of the TV/DVD for several seconds (the password resets).
Chapter 5: Other Information The invalid symbol appears on screen • The feature or action cannot be completed at this time because: – The disc’s software restricts it. – The disc’s software doesn’t support the feature (e.g., angles). – The feature is not available at the moment. – You’ve requested a title or chapter number that is out of range. Picture is distorted • • The disc might be damaged. Try another disc. It is normal for some distortion to appear during forward or reverse scan.
Chapter 5: Other Information Care and Cleaning CAUTION: Turn OFF your unit before cleaning. You can clean the unit as required, using a soft lint-free cloth. Be sure to occasionally dust the ventilation slots in the cabinet to help assure adequate ventilation. The LCD screen may be cleaned with a soft, lint-free cloth as well. Take care not to scratch or mar the screen. If necessary, you may use a cloth dampened with warm water.
Chapter 5: Other Information Formation of Condensation • Due to sharp changes in temperature and humidity, condensation may form if warm air comes in contact with any cold parts inside the player. • When condensation forms inside the player, it may not operate correctly. If this occurs, leave the player at room temperature until the inside of the player becomes dry and operational.

Les disques avec d’autres codes régionaux ne peuvent jouer sur ce lecteur. Utilisation des différents menus La programmation de chaque disque comporte des fonctions différentes.

Pendant la lecture d’un CD audio, la bannière d’informations apparaît automatiquement. Elle affiche la piste en cours de lecture et le temps de lecture pour chaque piste, le temps total sur le disque et le temps en cours de lecture.
Chapitre 2 : Lecture de disques Lecture de disques mp3 Le format mp3 permet de comprimer les fichiers de musique enregistrée. Il a été développé par Fraunhofer Gesellschaft en collaboration avec Thomson Inc. Le format mp3 a l’avantage de permettre la compression des pistes de musique CD de qualité pour les stocker sur un ordinateur sous la forme conviviale de fichiers comprimés. Les disques CD-R codés en format mp3 peuvent être lus sur votre lecteur DVD.
Chapitre 2 : Lecture de disques Saut de chansons Utilisez la touche Suivant ( ) de la télécommande pour passer à la chanson suivante.
