MAINTENANCE & LUBRICATION 8
8.16 CHECK AND LUBRICATE FLAIL SHAFT BEARINGS _________________________
The Flail Unit Shaft Bearings should be cleaned out completely and inspected yearly, at the end of the Cutting
Season. If the bearings are still serviceable they should be re-installed, together with new seals, and repacked
with grease. If there is any doubt about the condition of the bearings they should be discarded and replaced.
To check the flail shaft bearings.
• Remove the hydraulic motor.
• Remove the flail blades and mounting hardware.
• Check rotation for free movement.
• Check for movement in the bearing bores.
• Check for end float.
If any excessive movement is felt in any direction the bearings should be replaced.
• Insert 25 gram of Shell Gadus - S2 V220 2 grease into the bearing housing [7] via the grease nipple.
• Check that the screws holding the brace bar in front of the rear roll are tight and replace if missing.
WARNING
When the cutting unit is lifted in the transport position to do maintenance procedures, always
engage the transport latches.
WARNING
When you replace flails, always fit new hardware (supplied with blade kit), because hardware
can be worn and damaged. The use of worn hardware can cause unpredictable failure or
thrown objects
CAUTION
Over filling of grease will heat the bearings, decrease bearing life and melt the seals.
NOTE
Measure the weight of grease ejected from a single shot from the hand grease gun to determine how many
shots will be required to make up the 25 gram.
