Tominimizeresistance,thecopperwiremustbepre‐weldedtothegrounding
rods/plates,orweldedtotherods/platesusinganexothermicweldingprocessatthe
site.
Makesureallweldsaresecurebeforeburyingthegroundingrods.Rodsandplateswith
weldedjointsdonotneedperiodicvisualinspectionandcanbefullyburied(novalve
boxrequired).Measurethegroundresistancearoundthegroundingsystemafter
installation,andonceeveryyearafterthat.
Note:Thegroundwirefromtheequipmenttothegroundingsystemshould
beasshortaspossibleandhavenobends,kinks,orcoilsinthewire.
Inspectthegroundingsystem’sclampedconnectionstotheequipment(notthewelded
groundingsystemconnections)onceayeartomakesuretheyaresecureandcorrosion‐
free.

Threadedcouplers(showninFigureA.1‐2)aregroundrodsplices.Ifasinglegrounding
rodfailstoproduce10‐ohmgroundresistance(maximum),threadedcouplerscanbe
usedto“stack”groundingrods.
Note:Usethreadedcouplersmadeofthesamematerialasyourgroundingrods.
Stackinggroundrodsincreasesthetotaleffectiverodlength,decreasingground
resistance.Joiningtherodstogetherwiththreadedcouplersformsasecureconnection
sothegroundingrodscanbeassembledquicklyandeasily.
