What is Xerigation? Page 1
WHAT IS XERIGATION®?
Xerigation is Rain Bird’s registered trademark term for a system that distributes
water directly to plant root zones using Rain Bird’s low-volume, landscape-
specific irrigation products. “Xerigation” is closely related to the word
Xeriscape™, which refers to a landscape that conserves water by following the
“Seven Principles of Xeriscape Landscaping.” These principles are:
1. Proper planning and design.
2. Soil analysis and improvement.
3. Practical turf areas.
4. Appropriate plant selection.
5. Efficient irrigation.
6. Mulching.
7. Appropriate maintenance.
It is in the interest of efficient irrigation that Rain Bird developed the Xerigation
product line to meet the evolving needs of today’s landscapes by maximizing the
effective use of every drop of water.
Low-Volume Irrigation
Low-volume irrigation is simply a method of distributing water to plants. Like
conventional overhead systems, a low-volume system requires proper design,
installation, and ongoing maintenance. Table 1-1 highlights some of the similari-
ties and differences between conventional and low-volume irrigation systems.
