Updating the IPMI firmware and FPGA for ATCA-4500, ATCA-4550, and
ATCA-4555
ThesefirmwareupgradeinstructionscomplywiththePICMGHPM.1specification.TheIPMI
controllerandassociatedcircuitryincludeanumberofupgradablecomponents.Someof
thesecomponentsareupgradedindividually,whileothersareupgradedasagroup.
YoucanupgradetheIPMIfirmwareandFPGAusingeitherthe KCSinterfaceortheLAN
interface.Forfurtherdetails,refertothespecificshelforcarrierdocumentation.
Preparing rsys-ipmitool
Beforeusingrsys‐ipmitool,verifythattheversionisRadisysbuild2.15ornewerbyrunning
rsys‐ipmitool‐V.Additionally,ifyouhavecopiedthersys‐ipmitoolfileusingaWindows
system,youmustmakethefileanexecutable.EnterthesecommandsattheLinuxprompt:
chmod+xrsys‐ipmitool

Updating from the KCS interface
Whenrsys‐ipmitoolisrunfromthepayloadprocessor(LinuxOS),itusesthelocalKCSpa yload
interface.
1. VerifythatcommunicationispossibletotheIPMC:
./rsys‐ipmitoolmcinfo
2. Ifthepreviouscommandissuccessful,continuetostep3.Otherwise,checkthattheIPMI
driversaresuccessfullyinstalledandretrythecommand.
rsys‐update‐‐path/<tmp‐dir>/<update‐bundle>‐‐versions
3. Copythehpmimagefile intotheOSfilesystem.Theexamplehpmfileforthisprocedure
isfortheATCA‐4500.
4. CheckthefirmwareimageversionsrunningontheCPMandcontainedinthehpmfile:
./rsys‐ipmitoolhpmcheckcpm7_all.hpm
Thecommandidentifiestheactive,backup,andfileversions,providingasnapshotof
upgradablecomponents.
5. UpgradeandactivatetheCPM:
./rsys‐ipmitoolhpmupgradecpm7_all.hpmactivate
Ifthecommandfails,retryitthreetimesbef orecallingSupportforassistance.
Allcomponentsonthetar get(boot,application,andFPGA)thatdonotmatchtheversion
providedinthehpmfileareupgraded.
6. Aftertheupgradeiscomplete,upgradeandactivatetheapplicationcomponentagain.
Thisisnecessarybecausetheapplication componenthasabackupcopy.
