SerialoverLAN(SOL)isthespecificationofpacketformatsandprotocolsfortransmitting
serialdataoveraLANusingIPMIoverLANpack ets.SOLoperationisconceptually
straightforward.AremotemanagementapplicationcanestablishanIPMIoverLAN
sessionwiththeIPMC.Oncethesessionisestablished,theremoteconsolecanrequest
SOLsessionactivation.
TheCOMuxCPLDcontainsthemultiplexerfunctionalityforroutingCOMportsignals.The
COMportselectionisacombinationoftheCOMuxCPLDandBIOSmenuselection.There
isaBIOSbitthatselectstheCOMsnoopandselectionpriorityforCOM1orCOM2(front
orrearports,respectively).Figure 13showstheoverallSOLarchitecture.

ASOLsessionisestablishedonafirstcome,firstservebasisthroughoneoftheBase
EthernetportsorthefrontandrearEthernetports.Ifneitherthefrontnortherearserial
porthasacableconnectedtoit,thenthesystemBIOSconfigurationdetermineswhich
portsgetreadandwriteaccess.Ifcablesareconnectedtoboththefrontandrearports,
theBIOSconfigurationdetermineswhichportisgrantedaccess.Ifonlyonecableis
connected,readaccessisgrantedtothatport.
IftherearenoserialcablesattachedtoeitherthefrontorrearRJ45s,andCOM1_GPIOis
setlow,IPMCSOLconnectstotheSuperI/OCOM1.IfCOM1_GPIOissethigh,IPMCSOL
connectstotheSuperI/OCOM2.Inthismode,theIPMCSOLconnectionallowsforboth
RXandTXmodes.Figure 14onpage 66showsthisscenario.
