Shelf Manager cooling override
TheShelfManagerprovidesautonomouscoolingmanagementfortheshelf.However,there
maybesituationsunderwhichasystemmanagermightneedtooverridetheShelfManager's
coolingmanagementandcontrolfanspeedsitself.HPIapplicationscanchangefanspeeds
incrementallyusingstandardHPIcontrolsinthefanresources.FormoredetailsontheHPI
controls,seethecoolingandfancontrolsectionoftheSAFMappingSpecification.
Eachfanresourcehasonefancontrolinitsresourcedatarecord(RDR)repository.Inthe
ATCA‐6000andATCA‐6006shelves,systemmanagersmaychoosetousetheindividualfan
controlstooperateonlycertainfansmanuallywhilelettingtheShelfManageroperatethe
others.ThiscanbeusefulwhenthesystemmanagerwishestooverridetheShelfManager
coolingmanagementonlyononesideoftheshelfthathostsspecifichardware.
Note:IntheATCA‐6014andATCA‐6016shelves,allfansarecontrolledtogether.Makinga
changetoanyofthefancontrolsaffectsallofthefans.
Systemmanagerscanalsochoosetocompletelyoverridethecoolingalgorithmandusean
externalcoolingmoduletocontrolcooling.ThisisdescribedinOverridingthecooling
algorithmonpage 74.Overridingthecoolingalgorithmalsopreventsanyfanspeedchanges
causedbytheadaptivefanflooralgorithm;however,thealgorithmcouldsetanewfanfloor,
whichwouldtakeeffectifcoolingcontrolwerereturnedtotheShelfManager.
