Basic and enhanced shelf management operation
TheShelfManagerinanATCA‐6002shelfcanoperateintwomodes:enhancedandbasic.By
default,theShelfManageroperatesinbasicmode.Fordetailsonoperatinginenhanced
mode,refertoChangingtheShelfManageroperatingmodeonpage 39.
Note:TheATCA‐45xxseriesandtheATCA‐46xxseriesCPMsonlyoperateintheenhanced
modewhentheyareinstalledintheATCA‐6002shelf.
Basic mode
Inbasicmode,theShelfManagerprovideslimitedshelfmanagementfunctionalityinthe
ATCA‐6002shelf.TheShelfManagerdoesnotsupporthotswapormanageanyeventsand
alarmsinbasicmode.
TheShelfManagerprovidespayloadpowertothemoduleonwhichitisrunninginslot1,and
thenenablespowertothenodemoduleinslot2.TheShelfManageractivatessubsidiary
FRUsonbothmodulesandthebackplaneinterfacesonthenodemodule.Itthenhandsover
controloftheshelftothesystemmanagementsoftware.TheIPMCfirmwarecontinuesto
monitorthestateofthemodules.
TheShelfManagerusesaconfigurationfile(/etc/shmgr_basic.conf)thatcontainsstatic
informationaboutthepossiblenodemodulesthatcanbeinstalledinslot2.Thisfileincludes
theE‐Keyparametersandkeysensornumbersforscriptsusedtoactiv atethesubsidiaryFRUs
andbackplaneE‐Keys.Fordetails,refertoConfiguringtheShelfManagerinbasicmodeon

Enhanced mode
Inenhancedmode,theShelfManagerprovidesfullshelfmanagementfunctionalityinthe
ATCA‐6002shelf,withtheseexceptions:
•NoredundantShelfManagers.
•NoproxyFRUs.
•Nocontrollablefansintheshelf.TheShelfManagerdisablesthecoolingalgorithm.
•NophysicalshelfFRUdevice.ApersistentshelfFRUfile(/var/lib/shmgr/atca‐6002.bin)is
storedontheShelfManagermodule.
•Nophysicalalarmsupport(audibleorvisual).AlarmsarestilladdedtotheHPIdomain
alarmtable.
•NoHPISNMPsubagentsupport.
•NoRMCPconnectionsthroughtheBaseEthernetinterface.RMCPconnectionsare
enabledforthefrontpanel(eth0),loopback(lo),andFabricEthernet(eth2)interfaces.
TheShelfManagerenablespowertothemoduleonwhichitisrunning,andenablespayload
powerandE‐Keysforthenodemoduleinslot2.Theuser’sapplicationsinteractwiththeShelf
ManagerthroughtheHPIAPI.
