Adaptive thermal monitor for processor protection
TheCPUcasetemperaturemustremainwithinthespecifiedoperatingrangeinorderto
maintainreliabilityoverthelifeoftheprocessor.TheCPUincludesanadaptivethermal
monitor(ATM)tohelpcontroltheprocessortemperature.TheATMselectsbetweenvoltage
andfrequencycontrolandinternalclockmodulationtoreduceprocessorpowerandto
activatethethermalcontrolcircuitry.
EachCPUincludesasingledigitalthermalsensor(DTS)thatcontinuouslymeasuresthe
temperatureattheprocessingcoresandprovidesprocessordietemperatureinformationthat
representstheworstcasetemperatureforallcores.TheDTSdatarepresentsthediff erence
betweenthecurrentdietemperatureandthetemperatureatwhichtheATMactivatesthe
thermalcontrolcircuitry.TheIPMCaccessesDTSinformationthroughthePCHManagement
Engine(ME)overtheplatformenvironmentalcontrolinterface(PECI).TheMEindependently
monitorstheDIMM,CPU,andPCHtemperaturesandrelaysthatinformationtotheIPMC
