43-231b.fm Page 2 Thursday, August 12, 1999 4:15 PM FEATURES Your RadioShack Telephone Listener amplifies your calls through its built-in speaker so everyone in the room can hear. The Listener’s features include: • Suction Cup Pickup Coil — makes attachment to the telephone easy and convenient. The coil is designed so you can attach it (depending on the type of phone you use) to just about anywhere on the phone. • Volume Control — lets you adjust the Listener’s volume to a comfortable listening level.

Using Battery Power To power the Listener from an internal battery, you need one 9-volt battery (not supplied). For the best performance and longest life, we recommend an alkaline battery, such as RadioShack Cat. No. 23-553. Caution: Always use a fresh battery of the required size and recommended type.
3-231b.fm Page 4 Thursday, August 12, 1999 4:15 PM 1. Insert a coin into the slot between the front and back halves of the case, and twist it slightly to separate the halves, then lift off the front case. 2. Snap the battery connector over the battery’s terminals. 3. Place the battery on top of the foam cushion inside the front case, then place the back case over the front case and snap it closed. When the Listener’s volume drops or the sound distorts, replace the 9-volt battery.
43-231b.fm Page 5 Thursday, August 12, 1999 4:15 PM Cautions: • If you do not plan to use the Listener for a week or more, or if you plan to use only an AC adapter, remove the battery. Batteries can leak chemicals that can destroy electronic parts. • Dispose of old batteries promptly and properly. Do not burn or bury them. Using AC Power To power the Listener from a standard AC outlet, you need an AC adapter such as Cat. No. 273-1431.
43-231b.fm Page 6 Thursday, August 12, 1999 4:15 PM Cautions: • You must use an AC adapter that supplies at least 7.5 volts DC power and delivers at least 300 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to positive, and its barrel plug must properly fit the Listener’s 9V DC jack. The recommended adapter meets these requirements. Using an adapter that does not meet these requirements could damage the Listener or the adapter.
43-231b.fm Page 7 Thursday, August 12, 1999 4:15 PM Note: Connecting the AC adapter automatically disconnects the internal battery. MOUNTING You can place the Listener on a flat surface, such as a shelf or desk top, or mount it directly on the wall. To mount the Listener on the wall, you need two flat-head screws (not supplied) with heads that fit into the keyhole slots on the back of the Listener. Drill two holes 215/16 inches (75 mm) apart.

Note: To prevent feedback, do not place the suction cup pickup coil near the Listener’s speaker. 4. Because telephone designs vary greatly, you might need to try attaching the pickup coil at different locations on your telephone. Start by pressing the suction cup against the back of the handset, opposite the receiver’s earpiece.

Try the left rear corner of the phone’s base, as well as around the receiver’s earpiece. Keep moving the suction cup pickup coil until you find the position that provides the best sound quality and volume. 6. When you finish, leave the suction cup attached to the telephone and set ON/OFF to OFF.
43-231b.fm Page 11 Thursday, August 12, 1999 4:15 PM OPERATION To use the Listener, simply place or answer a call on the phone you attached it to, then set ON/OFF to ON. Adjust the Listener’s volume control to a comfortable level. When the call is over, hang up the phone then set ON/OFF to OFF.
43-231b.fm Page 12 Thursday, August 12, 1999 4:15 PM CARE To enjoy your Listener for a long time: • Keep the Listener dry. Don’t drop it. • Keep the Listener away from dust and dirt. • Wipe the Listener with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it looking new.
