5-26 Frequently Asked Questions ASMi-52 Ver. 2.8
Q Can I upgrade ASMi-52 version 1.xx to the latest SW version?
A ASMi-52 with SW versions 1.xx cannot be upgraded to SW version 2.xx (even
if you send the unit back to RAD). To work with SW version 2.xx, you must
buy new units that support SW version 2.xx.
Q How to provide an external clock when working with X.21 interface?
A In X.21 interface, when working in external clock mode (at the ASMi-52), you
will need to provide an external clock through pins 7 & 14
X.21's clock is provided through pins 6 & 13 but this is only from the side of
the unit providing the clock, not from the unit receiving it. Therefore, the EXT
clock for the ASMi-52 must be provided via pins 7 & 14 (as stated in the
user's manual).
Q Why is ASMi-52/ETH not sending EIGRP packets?
A It is correct that there is no real need to define an IP address to the modem
if it is working as a bridge. However, with some old versions, a modem
without an IP address defined (no matter what IP address actually was) or
without default gateway caused user data not to be transferred correctly end
to end
Just define the IP address and default gateway to both modems (local and
remote), and EIGRP packets will flow through them.
Q Do local and remote ASMi-52 need an IP address to be managed?
A To manage it via SNMP or Telnet, you will need an IP address only for the
local unit. The remote unit does not require an IP address; it is managed from
the local one. For terminal access, there is no need to define a management
IP address.
Q Does ASMi support OAM Ethernet?
A It will transparently transport OAM messages, but it does not deal with them.
Q Is a metal box is the same as Extended Temperature range?
A No. There is confusion that the metal boxes are the only ones that support
extended temperature range, and even more, that saying a metal box is the
same as saying extended temperature range. This is not true.
To have an ASMi-52 with extended temperature range, you must add at the
end of your ordering option “/ETR”. That is the only way to obtain an
extended temperature range modem.
Both a plastic box and a metallic one can support extended temperature
range (as long as the “/ETR” option is added).
Q Is the ASMi-52 modem compatible with 3rd party modem vendors?
A Yes. The chipset, which is installed in the ASMi-52 modems, is Globspan, and
the modems are fully compatible with SHDSL standards. Therefore, as long as
the modem of the 3rd party vendor is compatible with SHDSL standards, and
