As the speed pedelec has been categorized as moped
in the EU, most member states apply the following
requirements:
Helmet obligaon
Most member states of the European union, if not all,
have compulsory helmet wear for mopeds. However,
moped helmets are heavy and oer insucient
venlaon to be comfortable for speed pedelec
users. For this reason some countries have issued
specic helmet rules. The Netherlands, for example,
have issued a new norm for a speed pedelec helmet.
Speed pedelec users are obliged to use a special speed
pedelec helmet that conforms NTA 8776.

This chapter is specically intended for users
of the Performance RD10 Speed.
What is a speed pedelec?
‘Pedelec’ is a term that describes a bicycle with a motor
that only funcons on condion the cyclist pedals.
Pedelecs with a speed limit of 25 km/h are categorized
as normal bicycles in the EU.
The Performance RD10 Speed is a so-called ‘speed
pedelec’ and has been specically designed for higher
speeds up to 45 km/h. Speed pedelecs are categorized
as mopeds in the EU. In comparison to normal pedelecs
there are a few important regulaons to consider
before taking the bike on the road. If you have any
quesons aer reading this chapter, please contact
your dealer for more informaon.
Although the EU strives for uniform legislaon
in all member states, there are sll quite
some subjects which are handled dierently
in each country. Please consult the website of
your government to inform you on the local
legislaon.
