8.3 CD GENERATION PROCEDURES
Significant difficulty has been encountered using the ThinkPad 760XD with the 8X CD-ROM
drive when reading CDs that had been burned in-house. Many CDs could not be read at all,
while others would work on one machine, but not on another. To understand the cause,
testing was performed with variation made to the blank CD-ROM brand, burning software,
burning speed, and computer/burner platform.
The results indicate that the software used and the speed of the burning process are the most
significant factors. The only CDs that were successfully read by all tested machines were
written at single (1X) speed. Therefore, the POCCB strongly recommends that all CDs to be
used on orbit be burned at single (1X) speed. Also, either HyCD version 1.2, or Adaptec Direct
CD version 2.5a CD-ROM writing software should be used.
