Glossary 69
SCSI bus
Signal path or line shared by the devices on the same
SCSI channel. Information is often sent to all devices
throughout the same bus; only the device to which it is
addressed will accept it.
sequential-access mode
The cassettes in the magazine are inserted into the drive
in a sequential manner, i.e. number 1 is first, number 2 is
second, etc. When the last cassette is ejected from the
drive, the sequence will either stop and the VLS will issue
an error message or loop back to the first cassette. (Also,
see random-access mode.)
slot
A slot is the place within the magazine where the media is
placed. Each slot has a reference position, i.e. position 1
through position 15.
terminator
a physical block which tells the SCSI bus that this is the
end of the line. A terminator is required at both ends of a
SCSI bus. A bus may be terminated internally (on a
device inside the host system) or externally on a
peripheral device.
unload
The process which returns the magazine to its resting
position where it can be removed from the VLS unit.
VLS
Virtual Library System.
