Making and Receiving Data Calls
To Set the Data Rate for a Secure Data Call
The data rate is the speed at which the phone communicates data to and from the
attached computer or handheld device. Before you make a secure data call, you must set
the phone’s data rate to the data rate of the computer or handheld device.

From the Home screen, press the Select ( ) key.

Scroll to the
Security
tab, and press the Select ( ) key.
The Security menu appears.

Secure Data Rate
.

Select the appropriate data rate (
1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200,
or
38400
)
(expressed in b/s).
To Make a Secure Data Call
Before starting this procedure, make sure that the data cable (model DXDTA0011) is
attached to the bottom of the phone, and to the 9-pin serial COM port of the computer or
handheld device.

From the Home screen, press the Select ( ) key.

Scroll to the
Security
tab, and press the Select ( ) key.
The Security menu appears.

Select
Next Call
, then
Out Secure Data
.

TBD-Enter the phone number using the keypad, and press and hold the Send/Talk
( ) key (or use one of the methods specified in “Automated Dialing Methods” on
page 73).
If you have not logged on as a secure user, you will be prompted to do so. The
following notifications are displayed during the setup of a secure data call:

“Call setup in progress”
"
“Secure Data”

Transfer text or files using a communications application loaded to your computer or
handheld device (such as HyperTerminal).

To end this data call, press the Power/End-call ( ) key.
A “Secure call ended” notification appears on the screen.
Note
This setting automatically resets to Disable, so you can make voice calls again
after the secure data call is completed.
To receive secure data calls, you do not have to use this feature.
