Incoming Server is sometimes called a POP server. All of your incoming
e-mail messages are delivered to your incoming e-mail account, which
resides on a computer that runs your incoming e-mail server. Once your
messages arrive at your mail account, Eudora picks them up and
transfers them to your Palm. The name of your incoming e-mail server
should look like the following example: bunnies.qualcomm.com.
Internet is the set of interconnected networks that share the same net-
work address scheme and use the TCP/IP protocol.
Internet Protocol (IP) Address is an address which identifies the net-
work to which each computer on a TCP/IP network is attached as well as
the computer’s unique identification.
Internet service provider (ISP) is a vendor who provides direct access
to the Internet.
Mail Host is the computer on which e-mail messages are stored.
Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME) is an extension to Inter-
net mail which adds support for the exchange of multi-part messages, in-
cluding binary files.
password is a combination of letters, or letters and numbers, that are
used to gain access to a network and/or computer system. A password is
a security measure that helps to prevent unauthorized persons from work-
ing with another person’s computer resources or obtain access to a net-
work.
point-to-point is a term used to describe a data channel which connects
two, and only two, computers.
Point of Presence (POP) is the location where the local telephone com-
pany terminates subscribers’ circuits for leased line or long distance dial-
up circuits.
prefix is the number that you dial before the telephone number to access
an outside line.
protocol is a set of rules followed by two computers when they commu-
nicate with one another.
proxy is a software agent that acts on behalf of the user.
