Phone Basics Display indicators The indicators on the screen show you the status of the phone and the battery charge level at a quick glance. Phone Basics The security module must be properly installed to receive or make non-emergency calls. If the security module is not properly installed, you can only make emergency calls. Contact your SP for more information. Antenna The phone's performance depends on the strength of the signal it receives. As you rotate the Global star satellite antenna, the signal strength indicator shows improved performance. It is important to use the antenna properly for the best performance.
Phone Basics A Caution Never manually push or pull the Global star satellite antenna in or out of its protective sleeve. 2. Always hold the phone so that the Global star satellite antenna is vertical to the ground. 3. Hold the phone so that the antenna has an unobstructed view of the sky and the horizon. You always access new messages before accessing old messages.

Safety Issues Learn about safety issues involved with using a portable phone and how best to avoid dangerous conditions in this section. Radio frequency energy Your phone is a radio transmitter and receiver. When turned on, it receives and sends radio frequency (RF) energy. The system handling your call controls the power level at which your phone transmits. The power level can range from 0.01 watt to 0.40 watt.
Safety tissues To determine whether the electronic systems in your car are properly installed and shielded, check with the automobile manufacturer or the manufacturer of after-market equipment installed in your car. If you use personal medical devices, such as a pacemaker or hearing aid, consult the manufacturer to determine if the device is adequately shielded from external RF energy. Turn the phone off when in health care facilities and request permission before using the phone near medical equipment.
Safety tossups Potentially explosive areas Turn off your phone in areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere. It is rare, but your phone or its accessories could generate sparks, causing an explosion or fire that results in bodily injury or death. Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere are often, but not always, clearly marked.
Accessories The optional accessories described in this section are available from your SP. Extended battery An extended rechargeable battery offers approximately twice as much talk and standby time as the standard battery. For more information on batteries, see “Battery Care and Maintenance” on page 55. AC wall charger The AC wall charger (110V or 220V) supplies power to the phone and fast charges the battery attached to the phone. A green light indicates that the charger is plugged in properly.
Accessories Universal travel charger The universal travel charger allows you to charge either battery. You can charge a battery attached to the phone and, at the same time, one detached from the phone that is installed in the universal travel charger. Three optional plugs are available to convert the charger for use in different countries. 3 Note Be sure to use the appropriate plug in the area you are using the chargers and phone.
Accessories Cigarette lighter adapter The cigarette lighter adapter supports both U.S. and European vehicles. (For European vehicles, simply insert the adapter into the sleeve.) Plug the adapter into your vehicle's cigarette lighter to supply power to the phone (with or without the battery attached). You can also fast charge the battery at the same time. A green light indicates that the adapter is plugged in properly.
Accessories Hands-free car kit With the QUALCOMM Global star Hands-Free Car Kit, you can adapt your phone for hands-free operation in your vehicle.
