C. Thermostat Location
The thermostat’s location will have some effect on the
appliance’soperation.Whenthethermostatislocatedclose
totheappliance,itmayrequireaslightlyhighertemperature
setting to keep the rest of the house comfortable. If the
thermostatlocationisinanadjacentroomoronadifferent
oor level, you will notice higher temperatures near the
appliance.

Draftisthepressuredifferenceneededtoventappliances
successfully.Whenanapplianceisdraftingsuccessfully,all
combustion byproducts are exiting the home through the
chimney.

E. Negative Pressure

Negativepressureresultsfromtheimbalanceofairavail-

Tominimizetheeffectsofnegativeairpressure:
• Installtheoutsideairkitwiththeintakefacingprevailing
windsduringtheheatingseason
• Ensureadequateoutdoorairforallcombustionappliances
andexhaustequipment
• Ensurefurnaceandairconditioningreturnventsarenot
locatedintheimmediatevicinityoftheappliance
• Avoidinstallingtheapplianceneardoors,walkwaysor
smallisolatedspaces
• Recessedlightingshouldbea“sealedcan”design
• Attichatchesweatherstrippedorsealed
• Atticmountedductworkandairhandlerjointsandseams
tapedorsealed
Location of the appliance and chimney will affect

• Installthroughthewarmairspaceenclosedbythebuilding
envelope.This helps to producemoredraft,especially
duringlightinganddie-downofthere.
• Penetratethehighestpartoftheroof.Thisminimizesthe
effectsofwindloading.
• Locate termination cap away from trees, adjacent
structures,unevenrooflinesandotherobstructions.
• Minimizetheuseofchimneyoffsets.
• Considertheappliancelocationrelativetooorandceiling
andatticjoists.
• Takeintoconsiderationtheterminationrequirementson
